This Sunday’s Reflection
- Father Stephen.
Today we remember Saints Peter and Paul who guided the
early church just after the time of Jesus. Both died as
martyrs for the faith in Rome, in the early sixties, just thirty
years after the death of Jesus. Peter was crucified upside
down in the courtyard to the left of St. Peter’s Basilica, in
the courtyard behind the arch where the Swiss Guards now
stand on duty. Paul was beheaded between Rome and the
sea, in a place now called “Tre Fontane”, Italian for “three
fountains” after the legend that the three springs mark the
three places where Paul’s head bounced after he was
beheaded. Peter was buried in the nearest cemetery which
was on top of Vatican Hill and “St. Peter’s Basilica” was
later built on top of Peter’s tomb,
the main altar being directly on
top of his tomb. Paul was also
buried in the nearest cemetery
and the “Basilica of St. Paul’s
outside the Walls” was later
build on top of his tomb, the
main altar being directly on top
of his tomb. Each of these two
saints is important for different
reasons. Peter is important
because he was the first Pope
and kept the church united
which was growing very rapidly
in the years following Pentecost.
In the first years after Pentecost
it was the Jews who accepted
Jesus as the Saviour and so the
early church was a very Jewish
church. As time went on Paul
began to preach also to nonJews, the Gentiles as they were
called. All of us are Gentiles. His preaching was very
successful and he brought huge numbers of non-Jews into
the church, so much so that the number of Jews in the
church was greatly outnumbered by non-Jews. It is because
of Paul that we are now members of the Roman Catholic
Church. So both Peter and Paul had very important tasks in
the early church, Peter maintaining the unity in the church
which during his lifetime had already spread throughout the
Middle East and Europe, and Paul who taught the Jews that
Jesus is the fulfilment of their Old Testament hopes and
taught the non-Jews that Jesus is the Saviour. Whenever
you see statues or images of Peter and Paul, usually Peter
is holding keys, symbolizing his role as head of the church,
and Paul is holding a sword, the instrument of his death. As
we look at the personalities of Saints Peter and Paul, we
see that God called them to use their personalities to
spread the gospel, Peter to use his impetuous love to look
after the flock, and Paul to use his training as a Pharisee
and his strength of character to ensure that the non-Jews
would be welcomed into the church. It is a reminder to us
that our talents and our weaknesses too can become God’s
means of helping others. We don’t have to be perfect for
God to work through us, God can work through us, faults
and all, as he did with Peter and Paul.

Hoy recordamos a los Santos Pedro y Pablo, quienes guiaron la
primera iglesia justo después de la época de Jesús. Ambos
murieron por la fe en Roma como mártires, a principios de los años
sesenta, treinta años después de la muerte de Jesús. Pedro fue
crucificado de cabeza abajo en el patio, a la izquierda de la Basílica
de San Pedro; en el patio detrás del arco, donde hoy los Guardias
Suizos estan en servicio. Pablo fue decapitado entre Roma y el
mar, en un lugar que ahora se llama "tres fuentes", en italiano,"Tre
Fontane", donde hay una leyenda de que los tres muelles marcan
los tres lugares en los que la cabeza de Pablo rebotó después de
haber sido decapitado. Pedro fue enterrado en el cementerio más
cercano que estaba en la cima de la colina del Vaticano, y "La

importante por diferentes motivos.
Pedro es importante porque fue el
primer Papa y mantuvo la iglesia
unida, la cual fue creciendo muy
rápidamente en los años despues de
Pentecostés. En los primeros años
después de Pentecostés fueron los
Judios quienes aceptaron a Jesús
como el Salvador, por este motivo la
primera iglesia era una iglesia muy
judía. Con el paso del tiempo, Pablo
comenzó a predicar también a los no-Judios, los Gentiles como se
les llamaba. Todos nosotros somos Gentiles. Su predicación fue
muy exitosa y atrajo un gran número de los no-Judios a la iglesia,
tanto fue así que el número de Judios en la iglesia fue superado
enormemente por los no-Judios. Gracias a Pablo, nosotros somos
miembros de la Iglesia Católica Romana. Tanto Pedro como Pablo
tenían tareas muy importantes en la primera iglesia, Pedro ha
mantenido la unidad en la iglesia, la que durante su vida se
extendió por todo el Medio Oriente y Europa, y Pablo, fue quien
enseñó a los Judios que Jesús es el cumplimiento de sus
esperanzas del Antiguo Testamento, y enseñó a los no-Judios que
Jesús es el Salvador. Cada vez que vean las estatuas o imágenes
de Pedro y Pablo, por lo general Pedro está sosteniendo las llaves,
que simboliza su papel como cabeza de la iglesia, y Pablo está
sosteniendo una espada, que es el instrumento de su muerte. Si

Es un llamado para nosotros, que nuestros talentos y nuestras
debilidades también pueden convertirse en un medio de Dios para
ayudar a los demás. No tenemos que ser perfectos para que Dios

con fallas y todo, como lo hizo con Pedro y Pablo.

First Communion and Confirmation:
Students attending our parish school of St. John’s are
prepared for First Communion in grade two and for
Confirmation in grade seven. Parents of students
attending public schools are asked to contact Father
Stephen in September of the school year in which your
child is to make their First Communion or be confirmed.

When Someone Dies:
It is very desirable that a Funeral Mass for those who
have died be held in the church, with their body present.
Exceptions can be made. Please call the parish office for
assistance in planning a funeral.

Next Thursday, June 5th is the First Thursday of the month and
the 7:00 p.m. Mass will be in Spanish followed by Eucharistic
Adoration. On the First Friday, Eucharistic Adoration will start at
7:00 a.m. followed by Mass in English at 8:00 a.m.

St. Ann's Annual Novena: This year’s Novena to St. Ann (at St. Ann’s Parish in Hamilton)
will begin Friday, July 18th and conclude Saturday, July 26th, on The Feast of St. Ann and St.
Joachim. Each day we will have mass at 7:00 p.m. Novena Prayers will be offered for those in
attendance. During the Novena confessions will be heard each night after Mass with the
exception of the closing Mass. Preaching the Novena this year will be Fr. Joe Durkacz and
Bishop Douglas Crosby, OMI Bishop of Hamilton will offer the Closing Mass of the Novena.
There will be a light reception following the closing Mass at St. Ann’s School gym. For further
information, please call the parish office at 905-544-0488. All are welcome to this longstanding
and blessed event.
The St. John’s Youth Ministry would like to thank all parishioners for their prayers and support of our Youth Group
breakfast fundraiser. It was success! Funds will be used to help cover expenses such as program materials and
field trips for fun, fellowship and faith building. Stay tuned for future events with the Youth Group in our community!
St. Teresa of Avila Church, is celebrating 125 years of being
within Elmira. Come and celebrate with us in an evening of
music on Friday, July 18th at St. Teresa of Avila Church, 19
Flamingo Drive, Elmira beginning at 6:30 p.m. Music will be
provided by the St. Teresa Choir, Alyssa Dupuis, Rachel D’Souza,
Black Family, Ray Mercey, Mags and Critical Mass. A free will
offering will be taken up and CDs will be available for purchase.
Come and join us in this special evening.

Marriage and Parenting Tip: Marriage means making daily
decisions about who we will be in our relationship. We choose
how to act and those choices have a profound impact on our loved

us, or we can choose to focus on those good, loving and particular
qualities that drew us to our spouse. We can choose not to

Our Parish Picnic is scheduled for Sunday, July 27th
from 1:00 p.m. to 5 p.m. on the grounds of the church
and school. We hope to have games, music, a clown
with balloons, face painting and food. This event is for
both parishes of St. John’s and Our Lady of
Guadalupe. Everybody is invited.
