YEAR OF MERCY
THE GOOD SHEPHERD AND HIS PASSION
Today we begin to see how the risen Lord ministers to us as the Good Shepherd. The Gospels will give us
four portraits of Christ, the Good Shepherd and the King of Love. Today we consider the Passionate Love of
the Good Shepherd.
“I am the Good Shepherd, a good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.”
Purely gratuitous love is a great challenge. In one sense we are too needy to be able to give pure love. In
another sense our motives tend to be a mixture of self-love and love of the other. But Jesus loves us
purely, gratuitously, and for our own sake. His love is passionate in that it is sacrificial. He gave His life for
us. And He does so while we are sinners and often alienated from Him. He dies for us though we cursed,
mocked and ridiculed Him…. with no benefit for Himself.
On the other hand, hired shepherds work for pay, and seek their own good. When there is danger to the
sheep, they will not risk themselves to rescue the sheep. Theirs is a service based on pay, and is
subordinated to their own needs and safety.
Only one Shepherd died for us. In this world there are many people, politicians, music and movie stars, and
organizations that seek our blind loyalty, our votes, our membership and our dues. In return they make
promises, even as they try to influence us and exercise leadership over us. None of this is necessarily
wrong. We often form relationships and seek leaders. But note this important
difference: none of these leaders or “shepherds” ever died for you. Jesus died
for you.
Many Christians give greater loyalty to their political leaders, to musicians, to
movies stars than to Jesus Christ. Too many hide their faith beneath the cover
of politics, and give greater credence to what celebrities say, than to what
Jesus says in His Word and through His Church. Only Jesus died for you. Only
Jesus Christ loves you perfectly, only He died for you. Only He is the Shepherd
of your life.
EL BUEN PASTOR Y SU PASIÓN
Hoy comenzamos a ver cómo el Señor resucitado nos pastorea como el Buen Pastor. Los Evangelios nos da
cuatro retratos de Cristo, el Buen Pastor y el Rey de Amor. Hoy consideramos el amor apasionado del Buen
Pastor.
"Yo soy el Buen Pastor, el buen pastor da su vida por las ovejas."
El amor puro gratuito es un gran desafío. En cierto sentido, estamos demasiado necesitados para ser capaz
de dar amor puro. En otro sentido, nuestros motivos tienden a ser una mezcla de amor propio y amor por el
otro. Pero Jesús nos ama puramente, gratuitamente, y para nuestro propio bien. Su amor es apasionado en
lo que es sacrificial. Él dio su vida por nosotros. Y lo hace mientras somos pecadores y, a menudo alejados
de Él. Él muere por nosotros, aunque lo maldijimos, nos burlamos de él y lo ridiculizamos.... sin ningún
beneficio para sí mismo.
Por otra parte, hay pastores contratados que trabajan por un salario, y buscan su propio bien. Cuando las
ovejas están en peligro, no se arriesgan para rescatarlas. Su servicio es un servicio basado en la paga, y se
subordina a sus propias necesidades y seguridad.
Sólo un pastor murió por nosotros. En este mundo hay muchas personas, políticos, estrellas de cine y
música, y organizaciones que buscan nuestra lealtad ciega, nuestros votos, nuestra membrecía y nuestras
cuotas. A cambio, nos hacen promesas, e incluso tratan de influenciarnos y ejercer liderazgo sobre
nosotros. Nada de esto es necesariamente malo. A menudo formamos relaciones y buscamos líderes. Pero
tenga en cuenta esta diferencia importante: ninguno de estos líderes o "pastores" nunca murió por ti. Jesús
murió por ti.
Muchos cristianos dan mayor lealtad a sus líderes políticos, a los músicos, a estrellas de cine que a
Jesucristo. Demasiados ocultan su fe debajo de la cubierta de la política, y dan mayor credibilidad a lo que
dicen las celebridades, que a lo que Jesús dice en su Palabra y por medio de su Iglesia. Sólo Jesús murió
por ti. Sólo Jesucristo te ama perfectamente, sólo Él murió por ti. Sólo Él es el Pastor de tu vida.

ST. GIANNA MASS – Thursday, April 28, 2016,
at 6:30pm at the Church of St. Catherine of

This year’s St. Gianna Mass for couples suffering
infertility and recurrent miscarriage. Following
the Mass there will be veneration of the relics of
St. Gianna; an opportunity to meet with
Creighton physicians and practitioners who
specialize in assisting couples with infertility; and
a light reception.

This week the students in Grades 3 to 8 will be taking the Math
State Exam.
Our chocolate sale ends April 12th- we hope you were able to enjoy
some candy.
The students will be receiving Report Cards next week.
We Welcome Sr. Valerie a Sparkill Dominican to our staff. Sister
will be our full time nurse; we are happy to have her join our
St. John Chrysostom School Community.
