ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI CATHOLIC CHURCH WHITESBORO, TEXAS SEPTEMBER 28, 2014 “HE CHANGED HIS MIND AND WENT” by Fr. Jeremy Myers Matthew 21:28-32 Even God cares little for hard-headed people. Or so it seems from the gospel for today's liturgy, wherein we are told the story of the man who had two sons, both of whom are told to go work in the vineyard. The first one says “no” and then changed his mind and went. The second said “yes” but never intended on going. The Lord uses that brief story to chastise the chief priests and the elders for their close-mindedness, telling them in short form that “tax collectors and prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God before you.” The problem, as our Lord sees it, is that the religious people of his time seem to be close-minded, unable to believe or to see that the Son of God walks in their midst with a message of love and compassion. Instead, their hard-headedness blinds them to the Divine Presence before them. They are unable to change their minds because their minds are made up about what God does. And their God—to their way of thinking—has nothing whatsoever to do with sinners or wayward folks. Like the second son, they simply won’t change their minds. This steadfast refusal to change saddens our Lord, who sees the opposite reaction from sinners. They may have said “no” to God initially by their wayward behavior, but upon hearing and seeing the Lord Jesus, they have a change of heart. They begin to move towards that vineyard of the Lord. They are not so entrenched in their way of thinking that they can’t or won’t believe that God is among them. We must take that gospel message and use it as an examination of our own behavior. We must allow the Lord’s chastisement to touch our hearts, because each one of us carries a hardness of heart that makes it difficult for us to change our ways or our attitudes. Consider just a few examples of our stubbornness. Has our attitude towards the poor shown any appreciable change in recent years, or do we still believe them to be lazy and shiftless? Or what about the outcasts of society, such as the ones who do drugs or sell their bodies? Do we feel sympathy for them or do we simply judge them as unfit for our care? Or consider the people in our society who suffer from a stigma—the homosexual man or woman, the unwed mother, the mentally challenged? Do we simply join the chorus of criticism—full of certainty that these people are not worth our time—or are our minds capable of changing an opinion so that we can show love and mercy to these little ones? Some time ago the popular book, Tuesdays with Morrie, was advertised in the press. The spread read: “The #1 bestseller that will change your life.” The ad contained testimonies from readers who said how they were changed after reading the book. I would be the first to say that Tuesdays with Morrie is a good book; but I also would say that the Sacred Scriptures make for an even better book. If we truly read carefully and ponder closely the words of Scripture, then our lives will be changed in a real and a visible way. Discipleship, as our Lord makes plain all the time, is for people who are able to change, but it is denied the person who has a stubborn streak both in mind and in heart. Today, we want to let go of our hardheadedness so that we can be open to the Lord’s wisdom. TWENTY-SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME (A) We are not saved by belonging to the Church.
