Director of Liturgy and Music
“I am excited to be here”
To the Parish Family of Saint John Berchmans,
Greetings to you from your new Director of Liturgy and Music.
I am so pleased and excited to have been offered this position
within your community. It’s an exciting time and I am looking
forward to meeting each of you over the next several weeks.
But before we meet in person, I wanted to let you know a little
bit about me. So here goes--On the one hand I am not “new” to the parish since I have been
directing the parish Children’s Chorus over the last school year.
We started very small but ended the year with 25 energized
choristers in the choir! It was an amazing year for them as they
sang each week at the Friday School Mass and at graduation.
They also had the chance to sing at the Archbishop’s Mansion
for a donor reception for the Archdiocese as well as at The
University Club of Chicago. If you could have only seen the
smiles on their cherubic faces at these events.
So a little bit about me...
I love music! I love Church! And, I love liturgy! I love people!
I love to teach people of all ages and backgrounds! I have a
passion for instilling music, and church and liturgy into the
hearts and souls of all I meet.
This passion was ignited when I was in grade school at Saint
James in Arlington Heights. I was an altar server and a proud
member of the parish Men and Boys Choir. There were 60
of us who were taught and mentored by Sister Amabilia, a
member of the School Sisters from Saint Francis of Milwaukee,
Wisconsin.
1. I began piano lessons in 3rd grade with her as well. She had
a passion and it transferred to me.
That was the start of a very blessed life in church music.
Some important parts of my life:
I played weekend masses at Saint James all through high school
beginning in 8th grade and worked with the Adult Choir.
2. I did my undergrad in music at DePaul University.
3. I was Music Director at Saint Clement’s in Lincoln Park
for 14 years where we had an amazing 60+ members choir and
a Children’s Chorus and Handbell Choir. I started the annual
Handel’s Messiah Concerts there in 1975.
4. I took the choir on tour to Germany, Austria and
Switzerland for two weeks.
5. I did my graduate work, Master’s degree and Doctoral
Studies at USC in Los Angeles. I worked for the Archdiocese of
Los Angeles while out there.
6. I returned to Chicago and became Music Director at Saint
Josaphat’s for 13 years. Messiah concerts continued at this
parish.We grew a vibrant Music Program with handbells, a new
organ, a Children’s Choir, Parish Choir and a Contemporary
Ensemble.
7. I went back home to Saint James for 6 years and decided
that I am a city guy. I need to be in the city.....and so I began a
search for a parish.
Lucky for me, I landed here at Saint John Berchman’s! It truly
is a warm and welcoming parish. I am so glad to be here....
Please introduce yourself to me over the next few weeks. I
would love to get to know you!

Do you play an instrument? Join the ranks! Would you consider
becoming a cantor? Let me know. I will work with you to lead
us in prayer. Are you interested in volunteering for anything? I
promise I will find something that you would like to be a part
of......
In the meantime.....keep smiling, keep singing, keep being the
wonderful community of Saint John Berchman’s.

THINKING ABOUT BECOMING A CATHOLIC?
Is God calling you to a deeper relationship? Looking for
answers to questions you can’t quite name? Consider joining
our RCIA program. The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults
(RCIA) is for anyone 18 and older who would like to learn
more about the Catholic faith and for those who seek to be
baptized, receive First Holy Communion and be confirmed in
the Catholic Church. The RCIA can also help you complete the
necessary steps to become a member of the Catholic Church if
you were baptized in another Christian denomination. RCIA
meets on Thursday evenings, three times per month from
September to April. If you are interested in learning more, if
you know of anyone who might be a candidate for this journey,
or if you are willing to help as a catechist or sponsor, please
contact Shelagh Donoghue in the parish office.
Women’s Faith Circle
The Women’s Faith Circle will meet on Tuesday, July
12, in the school chapel beginning at 7 p.m.You are
invited to share some quiet, prayerful time in a faith
group as you take a break from the daily routine and
focus your attention on spiritual growth. The circle is
always open. Come, and bring a friend.
SUMMER OUTDOOR MASS SCHEDULE
On Sunday, July 17, and Sunday, August 14, all morning
Masses will be celebrated outdoors—weather permitting.
The 8:15 a.m.; 9:45 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Masses will be
held out front. Chairs will be provided and we’ll let nature
supply the setting as our faith community comes together
to share the blessings and give thanks for the gifts we have
received. Please join us. If the weather doesn’t cooperate,
Masses will be held as usual in the church.
Children’s Liturgy of the Word
MINISTRY OF CARE VISITS TO THE SICK AND
HOMEBOUND
Our Children’s Liturgy of the Word program is
on summer vacation for the months of July and
August. This child-centered celebration of the
Word takes place at the 9:45 a.m. Mass once a
month. It will resume on Sunday, Sept. 11, and
take place on the second Sunday of the month.
After the Introductory Rites of Mass, children
age 3 to 2nd grade are invited forward to
receive a blessing from the priest. The children
and their adult catechists adjourn to the church
basement where they listen to the day’s Gospel
and participate in related art and music activities.
Children return to the Mass after the prayer
petitions. Adults interested in helping should
contact Shelagh Donoghue in the parish office.
Your spiritual needs are very important to the staff at St.
John Berchmans. Ministers of Care are available to bring
communion to parishioners who are unable to attend Mass
due to illness or infirmity. A communion visit includes
time to listen and pray, as well as sharing the Eucharist,
with those who are homebound, in nursing homes or
in the hospital. This ministry is provided by trained and
certified lay people, members of religious communities,
and ordained deacons and priests. To request a visit from
a Minister of Care, for yourself or a loved one, please call
the parish office in the rectory at 773-486-4300 and ask
for Shelagh Donoghue.

Director de Liturgia y Musica
“¡Estoy muy contento de estar aquí!”
A la Familia Parroquial de San Juan Berchmans,
Saludos a todos ustedes de parte de su nuevo Director de Liturgia
y Música. Estoy muy contento y emocionado de que me hayan
ofrecido esta posición dentro de su comunidad. Es un momento
emocionante y estoy deseando conocer a cada uno de ustedes
durante las próximas semanas.
Pero antes de que nos encontremos en persona, quería dejarles
saber un poco acerca de mí. Así que…
Por un lado no soy “nuevo” ya que he estado dirigiendo el Coro
de niños de la parroquia durante el último año escolar. El coro
era muy pequeño al principio pero terminamos el año con ¡25
coristas energizados! Fue un año increíble para ellos mientras
cantaban semanalmente los viernes por la mañana en la misa de
la escuela y en la graduación. También tuvieron la oportunidad
de cantar en la Mansión del Arzobispo para una recepción de
contribuyentes de la Arquidiócesis, así como en The University
Club of Chicago. Si sólo ustedes pudieran haber visto las sonrisas
en sus caras angelicales en estos eventos.
Un poco acerca de mí...
¡Me encanta la música! ¡Me encanta la Iglesia! ¡Y me encanta la
liturgia! ¡Amo a la gente! ¡Me encanta enseñar a las personas de
todas las edades y orígenes! Tengo pasión para inculcar la música
y la iglesia y la liturgia en los corazones y las almas de todos los
que conozco.
Esta pasión inició cuando estaba en la escuela primaria St. James en
Arlington Heights.Yo era monaguillo y un orgulloso miembro del
coro de la parroquia de Hombres y Niños. Éramos 60 miembros.
La hermana Amabilia, miembro de las Hermanas de San Francisco
de Milwaukee, Wisconsin, nos enseñaba y fue nuestra mentora.
Empecé las clases de piano en el 3er grado con ella también.Tenía
pasión y me la transfirió.
Ese fue el comienzo de una vida muy afortunada en la música de
iglesia.
Algunas partes importantes de mi vida:
1. Toque en las Misas de fin de semana en St. James durante
toda la secundaria desde el octavo grado y trabajé con el Coro de
Adultos.
2. Hice mi licenciatura en música en la Universidad DePaul.
3. Fui Director Musical en San Clemente en Lincoln Park
durante 14 años donde tuvimos un impresionante coro de más
de 60 miembros y un Coro de Niños y Coro de Campanilla.
Comencé los Conciertos Anuales de Mesías de Handel allí en
1975.
4. Viajé con coro en una gira a Alemania, Austria y Suiza durante
dos semanas.
5. Hice mi Tesis, Maestría y Doctorado en la USC en Los
Ángeles. Trabajé para la Arquidiócesis de Los Ángeles, mientras
vivía allí.
6. Regresé a Chicago y me convertí en el Director de Música
en San Josafat durante 13 años. Los conciertos Mesías continuaron
en esta parroquia. Incrementamos el programa de música
vibrante, con campanas, un órgano nuevo, el Coro de Niños,
Coro Parroquial y un Conjunto Contemporáneo.
7. Regresé al hogar de St. James por 6 años y decidí que yo
soy un hombre de ciudad. Tengo que estar en la ciudad..... y así
empecé la búsqueda de una parroquia.
Afortunadamente, llegué aquí a San Juan Berchmans!
Verdaderamente es una parroquia agradable y acogedora. Estoy
muy contento de estar aquí.
Por favor preséntense a mí en las próximas semanas. ¡Me
encantaría conocer a cada uno de ustedes!
Consideren unirse al coro ..... jóvenes y viejos, grandes y
pequeños. ¡Todos son bienvenidos!

¿Consideran convertirse en un cantor? Háganmelo saber.
Trabajaré con ustedes guiándonos en la oración. ¿Están ustedes

Mientras tanto.....sigan sonriendo, sigan cantando, sigan siendo la
maravillosa comunidad de San Juan Berchmans.

Círculo de Mujeres de Fe
El Círculo de Mujeres de Fe se reunirá el martes 12 de
julio, en la capilla de la escuela comenzando a las 7 pm.
Usted está invitada a compartir un momento de tranquilidad, tiempo para orar con un grupo de fe, mientras
que usted toma un descanso de la rutina diaria y enfoca
su atención en el crecimiento espiritual. El círculo está

HORARIO DE MISAS AL AIRE LIBRE
El domingo, 17 de julio y el domingo, 14 de agosto todas las misas
de la mañana se celebran al aire libre, si el clima lo permite. Las
Misas de 8:15 am, 9:45 am y 11:30 am. se celebrarán en frente
de la iglesia. Las sillas serán proporcionadas y vamos a dejar
que la naturaleza suministre lo demás mientras que nuestra
comunidad de fe se reúne para compartir las bendiciones y dar
gracias por los dones que hemos recibido. Por favor únanse a
nosotros. Si el clima no se presta, las Misas se llevarán a cabo
como de costumbre en la iglesia.
Liturgia de la Palabra de Niños
VISITAS DEL MINISTERIO DE CUIDADO A LOS ENFERMOS
Y DISCAPACITADOS
Nuestro programa de Liturgia de la Palabra de Niños está
de vacaciones de verano durante los meses de julio y agosto.
Esta celebración de la Palabra centrada en los niños ocurre
en la Misa de 9:45 a.m. una vez al mes. Comenzaremos
nuevamente el domingo, 11 de septiembre y ocurrirá el
segundo domingo del mes. Después de los ritos iniciales
de la misa, los niños de 3 años a 2º grado están invitados
a recibir la bendición del sacerdote. Los niños y sus
catequistas adultos bajan al sótano de la iglesia, donde
escuchan el Evangelio del día y participan en actividades
relacionadas de arte y música. Los niños regresan a la
Misa después de las peticiones de oración. Las personas
adultas que estén interesadas en ayudar deben ponerse
en contacto Shelagh Donoghue en la oficina parroquial.
Sus necesidades espirituales son muy importantes para el
personal de St. John Berchmans. Los Ministros de Cuidado
están disponibles para llevar la comunión a los feligreses que
no pueden asistir a la Misa debido a alguna enfermedad o
malestar. Una visita de comunión incluye tiempo para escuchar

Teachers and Subs Needed for Religious Education Program
July 3, 2016
The Religious Education program needs additional adults to
join our team of dedicated and faith-filled volunteer catechists.
Religious Education meets from 9 to 10:30 a.m. on most Saturdays from September through April. Please consider being a
substitute catechist if a weekly commitment is too much at this
time. We provide curriculum materials and training. Classes for
the 2016-2017 school year begin Saturday, Sept. 10.
Students who attended the PreCommunion or PreConfirmation classes during the 2015-2016 school year must register
again for the coming year so they will be able to make First
Holy Communion or Confirmation in 2017.

Se necesitan Maestros y Substitutos para el Programa de Educación Religiosa
El programa de Educación Religiosa necesita adultos adicionales para unirse a nuestro equipo de catequistas voluntarios dedicados y llenos de fe. El
programa de Educación Religiosa se reúne de 9 a 10:30 am en la mayoría
de los sábados desde septiembre hasta abril. Si un compromiso semanal es
demasiado en este momento, por favor considere ser catequista substituto.
Proporcionamos entrenamiento y materiales curriculares. Las clases para
el año escolar del 2016-2017 comenzarán el sábado 10 de septiembre.
