What a dream! Or was it a nightmare? To be commanded to take flight like refugees in the night, to have a newborn baby and no time to pack or plan, all this must have been frightening to say the least. Joseph was no stranger to life-changing dreams though. He had already been told in a dream to take Mary as his wife, even though she was with child. He had planned to divorce her, but the dream completely changed his course. And now God was asking him to change course again, to relocate his family and live as aliens in a foreign land, under the shadow of Herod's headhunt for their son. But Joseph accepted these trials, placing his trust in God. Although few of us have dreams like Joseph did, we do share with him the challenge of reconciling our plans with the hard facts of reality. When things don't go our way, we can respond with bitterness, or like the Holy Family, we can recognize an opportunity to deepen our faith in God's providence. The holiness of this family did not prevent them from suffering. Rather, their holiness kept the suffering from overwhelming them. Even with the twists and turns in their path, they never got lost. Their faith in God was like a spiritual compass that kept them oriented in the most unfamiliar circumstances. When we too are called to change course in life, may we remember to let God show us the way. ©2013 Liturgical Publications Inc. Deacon Corner: A lesson on the birth of Jesus from Fr. Rolheiser: As you prepare for the Sunday readings don’t forget to utilize the website at www.liturgy.slu.edu. And the Preparing for Sunday link which is located on the front of the parish website. Justin Myers from the diocesan office of Justice and Peace will be the guest speaker. He has taken the list of participant’s questions and concerns from last months session. Everyone is invited. Please call Eileen if you would like to join us for “A Slice of LIFE”. We have some families that are going through some difficult times. If you could help with “LIFE Support” and donate just a small amount, cash or check, to help defer the cost for some of these families, it would be GREATLY appreciated. Make a check out to St. Augustine and in the memo area please write “LIFE Support” or place cash in an envelope with “LIFE Support” and your name on the outside. Thank you!!! Fran Invitation Please join our children on Epiphany Saturday night at the 5:30pm Mass as they re-enact the narration story of Our Lord. Youth and Children proclaiming the Narration should be at church by 4:45pm. "Scholars suggest that there is a deeper lesson in Jesus having to be born in a stable because there was no room for him in the inn. What is being stressed is not so much lack of hospitality by an innkeeper, but rather the fact that Jesus was born outside of a city, outside of what is comfortable, outside of glamour and fame, outside of being recognized by the rich and the powerful, and beyond notice by the everyday world. Jesus was born in anonymity, poor, outside of all notice, except for family and God." "Mary gave birth to the Christ in a stable because there was no room for them in the inn. This is a comment on more than just the busyness and inhospitality of some ancient innkeeper. It is a comment upon what, in fact, lies deepest within human life. In essence, what it says is that it is not those who sit at the center of things, the powerful, the rich, the famous, the government leaders, the entertainment celebrities, the corporate heads, the scholars and academics, who ultimately sit at the center of life. What deepest and most meaningful inside of life lies in anonymity, unnoticed by the powerful, tenderly swaddled in faith, outside the city." L.I.F.E. Elementary Sunday—The next session is January 5th for the 9:45am session. We are in need of parents to assist the teacher for the 9:45am class. No training needed.
