SAINTS & HEROES OF THE FAITH: ST. JUAN DIEGO Dec. 9, 1531 a “lady” appeared to the Aztec, Juan Diego (now a saint whose feast day is Dec. 9). She appeared near the Hill of Tepayac, the place where Aztec religion offered human sacrifices of small children to one of their gods. Juan, a devout Catholic, was told to go to the Spanish bishop and ask him to build a chapel on that hill that would honor her as the “mother of the True God.” He did that and the bishop asked for a sign. On the morning of Dec. 12, the Blessed Mother gave Juan the sign. She told him to go to the top of the hill and pick roses. On the hill he found beautiful roses growing out of the frozen earth. He carefully picked them and arranged them in his cloak (called a tilma—an apron-like garment). When he arrived at the Bishop’s house, the roses fell to the floor. Juan realized that everyone in the room was kneeling in front of him. There on his tilma was the image of Our Lady, pregnant, dressed as an Aztec princess, but standing upon the moon and in front of the sun (the sun god was the main god of the Aztecs). Her appearance was that of a mestizo girl: a mixture of Aztec and Spanish. After that, 16 million were baptized and added to the Catholic Faith. The Image of Our Lady of Guadalupe bears a message of evangelization: the Basilica of Mexico is a center "from which flows a river of the light of the Gospel of Christ, spreading throughout the earth through the merciful Image of MARY" (Blessed John Paul II, December 12, 1981). ***************************************** CHRISTMAS RECEPTION AT THE RECTORY—DECEMBER 13 Mark your calendars!
