PLANTING AND NURTURING THE SEEDS OF
VOCATIONS

VOCACIÓN
Hispanic Catholic are present in nearly every diocese
in the United States. According to the United States
Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), Hispanics make up
over 40% of all Catholics in this country; furthermore, just over
53% of those under the age of 30 are Hispanic. By comparison,
only 7% of the U.S. priests, 12% of the deacons, and 11% of
the bishops are Hispanic, according to figures compiled by
Instituto Fe y Vida in 2013. These numbers have led the
USCCB to make Hispanic vocations a priority by reaching out
to Latino youth and creating a culture of vocations in parishes
and families.
For over a decade the Hispanic Ministry Resource
Center of Claretian Publications has worked to foster vocations
among Hispanic youth and their families through ¡OYE!, a faith
and discernment guide that is published annually in a bilingual
format and distributed at no cost to parishes, dioceses, campus
ministry, and youth groups throughout the United States.
¡OYE! Understands vocation as a baptismal call and
presents a wide range of vocations to the religious life,
priesthood, single and married life, as well as all forms of
service and leadership in Church and society. ¡OYE!’s
interactive website and social media engages young Hispanics
on a national level, bringing them together to share, discuss,
pray, and discover the many ways that God is calling them.
Parishes, youth groups or others who wish to plant or nurture
the seeds of vacations by sharing role models of dedicated
faithful, who have followed their call, can turn to ¡OYE!
Magazine as a vocation resource.
In May, Pope Francis delivered a message for the
51st World Day of Prayer for Vocations asking the faithful to
pray for vocations. “I ask you bishops, priests, religious,
Christian communities and families to orient vocational pastoral
planning in this direction, by accompanying young people on
pathways of holiness which, because they are personal, call for
a genuine ‘training in holiness’ capable of being adapted to
every person’s need. This training must integrate the resources
offered to everyone with both the traditional forms of individual
and group assistance, as well as the more recent forms of
support offered in associations and movements recognized by
the Church,” said Pope Francis.
The Pope also invited young people to listen and
follow Jesus, allowing themselves to be transformed by his
words, which are spirit and life. “Let us dispose our hearts
therefore to being good soil, by listening, receiving and living
out the word, and thus bearing fruit. The more we unite
ourselves to Jesus through prayer, Sacred Scripture, the
Eucharist, the Sacraments celebrated and lived in the Church
and in fraternity, the more there will grow in us the joy of
cooperating with God in the service of the Kingdom of mercy
and truth, of justice and peace. And the harvest will be plentiful,
proportionate to the grace we have meekly welcomed into our
lives.”

Nuestra Parroquia
Los católicos hispanos están presentes en casi todas
las diócesis de los Estados Unidos. Según la Conferencia de
Obispos Católicos de Estados Unidos (USCCB), los hispanos
constituyen más del 40% de los católicos del País; y un poco
más del 53% de quienes tienen menos de 30 años. En
comparación, sólo 7% de los sacerdotes, 12% de los diáconos
y 11% de los obispos son hispanos, según las cifras recogidas
por el Instituto Fe y Vida en 2013. Estas cifras han llevado a la
USCCB a hacer prioritarias las vocaciones hispanas, saliendo
al encuentro de los jóvenes latinos y creando una cultura
vocacional en parroquias y familias.
Por más de una década, el Centro de Recursos para
el Ministerio Hispano de Publicaciones Claretianas ha
trabajado para fomentar vocaciones entre los jóvenes
hispanos y sus familias a través de ¡OYE!, una guía de fe y
discernimiento que e publica anualmente en formato bilingüe y
se distribuye libre de costo a parroquias, diócesis, ministerios
universitarios y grupos de jóvenes en todo Estados Unidos.
¡OYE! Entiende la vocación como una llamada
bautismal y presenta una amplia gama de vocaciones a la vida
religiosa, el sacerdocio, la vida soltera y el matrimonio, así
como toda clase de servicio y liderazgo en la Iglesia y la
sociedad. La página web interactiva de ¡OYE! Y las redes
sociales también atraen a los jóvenes hispanos a nivel
nacional, reuniéndolos para compartir, discutir, orar y descubrir
los muchos modos en que Dios está llamándolos. Las
parroquias, los grupos juveniles o quienes deseen plantar o
alimentar las semillas de la vocación compartiendo modelos de
fieles comprometidos que han seguido su llamada, pueden

En mayo, el Papa Francisco pronunció un mensaje
con motivo de la 51 Jornada Mundial de Oración por las
Vocaciones, pidiendo a los fieles que oraran por las
vocaciones. “Les pido a ustedes, obispos, religiosos,
comunidades cristianas y familias, que orienten su
planificación pastoral vocacional en esta dirección,
acompañando a los jóvenes por los senderos de la santidad
que, al ser personales, exigen una verdadera “formación en la
santidad” capaz de ser adaptada a las necesidades de cada
persona. Esta formación debe integrar los recursos que se
ofrecen a todos en tanto en las formas tradicionales de ayuda
individual y grupal, como con las formas de apoyo más
recientes ofrecidas en asociaciones y movimientos
reconocidos por la Iglesia”, dijo el Papa Francisco.
El Papa también invito a los jóvenes a escuchar y
seguir a Jesús, dejándose transformar por sus palabras, que
son espíritu y vida. “Dispongamos nuestros corazones, por
tanto, a ser buena tierra, escuchando, recibiendo y viviendo la
palabra, y dando así fruto. Cuanto más nos unamos con Jesús
a través de la oración, la Sagrada escritura, la Eucaristía y los
sacramentos celebrados y vividos en la Iglesia y en
fraternidad, más crecerá en nosotros la alegría de cooperar
con Dios en servicio del Reino de misericordia y verdad, de
justicia y paz. Y la cosecha será abundante, proporcional a la
gracia que humildemente hemos recibido en nuestras vidas”.

All the Parishes of the Diocese of Wilmington will
participate in a major fundraising effort that will
help strengthen our parish and diocese. The
Sustaining Hope for the Future campaign will
achieve four objectives: to reinforce the pension
plan for our dedicated employees; to grow the
retirement fund for our beloved priests; to
strengthen existing diocesan ministries; and to
sustain the current and future needs of our
parishes.
Our parish will take part in the campaign beginning
in mid-September. We are currently looking for
volunteers to help with the effort. You will receive
training and be asked to attend a couple of brief
meetings. Your primary focus as a volunteer is to
visit and follow up with other parishioners about the
campaign, provide testimonial and encourage
support.

FOR THE SAKE OF GOD’S CHILDREN
Ever heard of For the Sake of God’s Children? In
2003 the Diocese implemented a safe environment
program entitled “For the Sake of God’s
Children” throughout the Diocese of Wilmington
designed to keep young people participating in
ministry around the diocese free from harm. Since
that time more than 20,000 persons have
participated in background checks, committed to
the ethical standards or volunteer covenant, and
received education about the nature of and
prevention of child abuse in all its forms.
Participants include the Bishop, all priest, deacons,
seminarians, religious brothers and sisters and all
lay employees and volunteers. For more

The Bishop’s Annual Wedding Anniversary
Mass
Bishop Francis Malooly invites all couples
celebrating their 25th or 40th or 50th wedding
anniversary, or any anniversary beyond 50, to the
Annual Wedding Anniversary Mass at 1:30 PM on
Sunday, September 28, 2014 at St. John the
Beloved Parish, 907 Milltown Road, Sherwood
Park, Wilmington, DE 19808. A reception with
light refreshments in the parish hall will
immediately follow the Mass. Certificates for 25th,
40th, 50th, 55th, 60th, 65th, and 70th wedding
anniversaries will be distributed in Church. Others
will be given out at the reception. There is no cost
