A Message from our Pastor
Our Special Wedding program here in the parish is a wonderful
program for couples who are married civilly, but not through the
church, or who have lived together without marriage and would
now like to receive the sacrament of marriage and have their marriage blessed through the church. Unfortunately we do not have a
lot of couples who take advantage of the program. From our home
visits and meetings with people in the parish, we know that there
are many couples not married by the church, but they do not do
anything to change the situation. If you, a family member or a
friend is in a relationship like this, please encourage them to participate in this program.
The program is composed of a meeting with the other couples
and some leader couples once a month. This helps the couples to
reflect on their relationship and their relationship to the church, and
takes care of all the requirements for marriage in the church. There
is also a retreat day for the couples shortly before the date of the
wedding, so that all can be well prepared for the ceremony itself.
Then we celebrate the marriage of all the couples in a common
ceremony on a Saturday evening near the day of St. Valentine.
This makes the whole celebration much more economical for everyone, and fulfills all the requirements of the church for the sacrament of matrimony. Please encourage couples you know to take
advantage of this opportunity. There is more information in the
bulletin and you can register in the rectory.

When I was a kid, my friend Vinnie
was a frequent visitor —coming over
early and staying late. His mother
suffered migraines, which put her in a
bad mood. Our home was a haven for
him. Years later we moved, and I said good-bye to my friends.
One lucky day, I met Joe, who had seven siblings. I felt so welcome in his home that, decades later, when I visited his aging
parents, I glanced behind their back door expecting to see my
baseball mitt was still there. Hospitality recognizes and responds to the vulnerable state of the stranger.
It is good for families to be close. It’s even better when close
families open their homes and hearts to others who need friendship and an occasional safe place to land. —Tom McGrath

Un mensaje de nuestro párroco
Nuestro programa Boda Especial aquí en la parroquia es un
magnífico programa para parejas que están casadas por el civil,
pero no por la iglesia, o que están viviendo juntos sin matrimonio, pero que ahora les gustaría recibir el sacramento del matrimonio y tener este bendecido por la iglesia. Desafortunadamente
no tenemos muchas parejas que quieran tomar ventaja de este programa. De las visitas que hacemos a los hogares de la comunidad
y de reuniones con gente en la parroquia, sabemos que hay muchas
parejas que no están casadas por la iglesia, pero que no hacen nada
por cambiar la situación. Si usted, un familiar o un amigo está en

Boda Especial se compone de reuniones con otras parejas, las
cuales se llevan a cabo una vez al mes. Estas tienen la intención de que las parejas reflexionen acerca de su relación de

asisten a un retiro un poco antes de la fecha de la boda, con el
propósito de que todas las parejas estén bien preparadas para la

con una ceremonia en común en un sábado muy cercano al día
de San Valentín. De esta manera la celebración es más

Cuando era niño, mi amigo Diego me visitaba mucho, venía
temprano y se quedaba hasta muy tarde. Su mamá sufría de
migrañas que la ponían de mal humor. Nuestro hogar era un
refugio para él. Algunos años después, nos mudamos y dejé de
ver a mis amigos. Un día de suerte, conocí a José, que tenía
siete hermanos. Me sentía tan acogido en su casa que, décadas
más tarde, cuando visité a sus padres, ya mayores de edad, eché
un vistazo hacia la puerta trasera esperando ver que mi guante
de béisbol siguiera ahí. La hospitalidad es la virtud que reconoce y reponde al estado de vulnerabilidad del desconocido.
Es bueno que haya cercanía entre las familias. Pero es incluso
mejor cuando las familias cercanas abren sus hogares y sus

“Everyone of you who does not renounce all his possessions
cannot be my disciple.” Luke 14:33
When we first hear this statement, it seems that Jesus is making
an unrealistic demand upon us. How can we renounce all of our
possessions? We need them to live. However, what we must
renounce is the belief that they belong to us. Everything that we
have belongs to God alone. All of our resources are entrusted to
us not only for our own use, but also so that we can help others.
Once we renounce the idea that we possess or are entitled to
anything, it is much easier to share the many gifts that God has
given us. Then we truly are His Disciples.

Cuando escuchamos esta frase, parece como si Jesús nos estuviera haciendo una demanda poco realista. ¿Cómo podemos
renunciar a todas nuestras posesiones? Las necesitamos para
vivir. Sin embargo, a lo que si debemos renunciar es que todo
lo que tenemos nos pertenece. Todo lo que tenemos le pertenece
solo a Dios. Se nos confía todos nuestros recursos no tan solo para
nuestro propio uso, sino que también para ayudar a los otros. Una
vez que renunciemos a la idea de que poseemos o tenemos derecho
a algo, es más fácil compartir los muchos regalos que Dios nos ha
dado. Así somos de verdad Sus Discípulos.

Attitude Change
Today’s readings ask us to re-think our attitudes and ways. The passage from the book of Wisdom reminds us that, when it comes to understanding, even the wisest person barely scrapes the surface of things.
In Paul’s provocative little letter to Philemon, the apostle praises
Philemon for his understanding of the social order—which included
slavery—and for his good treatment of Onesimus. Then Paul goes on to
drop his bombshell. He tells Philemon that Onesimus is now a Christian
and should be treated as such—as a brother, an equal. What was Philemon to think?
Today’s Gospel tells us that if we are to follow Jesus, we must do
some serious planning. Then, once all our planning is complete, we have
to be willing to accept the fact that our plans are never enough.

Las lecturas de hoy nos sugieren repensar nuestra actitud y nuestro
comportamiento. El pasaje del libro de la Sabiduría nos recuerda que, en
lo que se refiere a entender, aun la persona más sabia apenas toca la superficie de las cosas.
En la provocativa y breve carta de san Pablo a Filemón, el apóstol lo
elogia por entender el orden social –que incluye la esclavitud– y por tratar bien a Onésimo. Luego Pablo le da la noticia. Le dice que Onésimo
es ahora cristiano y debe tratarlo como tal –como un hermano, igual a él.
¿Qué pensaría Filemón?
El Evangelio de hoy nos dice que si vamos a seguir a Jesús, debemos
planearlo seriamente. Y cuando creamos que ya estamos listos, estar
dispuestos a aceptar que nuestros planes nunca son suficientes.

St. Joseph College Seminary is a good fit for men who are
interested in college and at the same time want to discover if
God may be calling them to be a Catholic priest.
Who can receive Anointing of the sick?
Since Anointing of the sick is a sacrament and not a sacramental or merely a blessing, the person is capable of receiving this
sacrament if:
Our seminary building is located on the lakeshore campus of
Loyola University Chicago. Seminarians pursue a Bachelor of
Arts in Philosophy and a minor in Communication from Loyola
as they complete the Program for Priestly Formation.

Come & See!
The best way to see if St. Joe’s is right for you, is to come and
see it for yourself. Schedule a visit, arrange a campus tour,
shadow a seminarian for a day, talk to our vocation director, or
just stop by.
Also a sick person may be anointed before surgery whenever a
serious illness is the reason for the surgery.
Have received the sacrament of baptism.
Have attained the use of reason.
Is in danger because of illness or old age.
Have confessed
Equally elderly people may be anointed if they have become notably weakened even though no serious illness is present.

Taking a look doesn’t mean you have to apply, but it can help
greatly in making a decision as you respond to the life God may
be asking you to discover.
