From the Pastor Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Today is called the SUNDAY OF THE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST or in Latin CORPUS CHRISTI SUNDAY. It is a day in which we give special recognition and honor to the real presence of Christ in the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist. This afternoon following the 1:00 p.m. Mass we will have a procession of the Blessed Sacrament around our property stopping at two altars that were erected for the occasion. The whole community of Sts. Peter and Paul parish will be participating as a sign of our love and devotion to Christ in the Sacrament of His love. After the procession we will have an ice cream social outside under the awning of the Church. Today is also the day that some of our children whose families attend the Latin Mass will be receiving their First Holy Communion. They have been prepared by their parents and have been meeting together with Molly Trudeau. I am sure they and their parents are excited and happy on this wonderful occasion. I too share their happiness as their Pastor. I am sure Our Lord Himself is joyful that these little children are coming to Him for the first time to receive His Body and Blood. This whole week is going to be a week of celebration so that today’s Feast of Corpus Christi is connected to next Sunday’s Feast of Sts. Peter and Paul. Every evening we will have special prayers and events to honor Our Blessed Lord and His holy Mother as well as our patron saints who watch over us from Heaven: Sts. Peter and Paul and St. Toribio Romo. May God bless these good stewards who give of their time and talent to assist the rest of us in so many ways here at our parish. Have a good week and enjoy the events of today and throughout this week. Sincerely yours always, Father Timothy Davison The effect of our sharing in the Body and Blood of Christ is to change us into what we receive. Pope St. Leo the Great Living the Beatitudes The Path to a Happy Life Our contemporary world confuses pleasure with happiness. We are told that money, travel, pleasure, power, and other attractions will make us happy. No matter how hard we try, such allurements never satisfy us. So what then is our fate? Jesus gives us the answer. He teaches us that the living God offers us the path to abiding happiness. We trod this path when we live the beatitudes. They are God’s road map to cultivating a happy life. They describe the spirituality of a true disciple by setting the standard for right action in light of Jesus’ cross and resurrection. They help us live Jesus’ way. The beatitudes are Jesus’ gift to us. They show us the path to a happy life. As faithful disciples, we walk this path to achieve true happiness. Jesus proclaimed the Eight Beatitudes during a time of harsh Roman rule. Society today is also beset with challenges that bring pain and adversity to those living a moral life. Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of Heaven Mt 5:3) The first beatitude reflects the words of Isaiah, quoted by Jesus in the synagogue. “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor” (Lk 4:18). The biblical poor recognize their need for God and accept his sovereignty. The phrase “poor in spirit” is connected with humility and recalls the Magnificat, where Mary speaks of her lowliness (see Lk 1:48). The first beatitude demands absolute trust in God and humility before the almighty and allloving God. Being poor in spirit has nothing to do with a particular state in life. People who are poor in spirit strive to achieve an attitude of trust in God, which is both liberating and humanizing. Achieving this brings freedom of heart and detachment from worldly things that enable us to grow in love of God and neighbor. When is it most difficult for me to place my trust in God? Ordinary Form: The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi) Extraordinary Form: 2nd Sunday after Pentecost Blessed are they who mourn, for they will be comforted. (Mt 5:4) The second beatitude describes those who experience loss and the intense feelings of grief that accompany any such death or tragedy. The beatitude hearkens back to God’s words, “Comfort, O comfort my people” (Is 40:1). When Paul experienced devastation, he called on the “God of all consolation” (2 Cor 1:3). The call for comfort reaches full expression when Jesus’ mother stood by the cross. Grief is a part of living, especially when something happens to a beloved child, spouse, parent, or friend. This beatitude promises that God always comforts us, often through people who are with us in our darkest hours. To give and receive comfort is the path of the disciple. When we mourn, we choose the way of the disciple, confident that victory will be ours. When we mourn, we act in the spirit of Christ who mourned and put himself in his Father’s hands. How do I offer support and God’s loving comfort to those who are grieving? Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth (Mt 5:5) the third beatitude connects us with the Old Testament notion of meekness that is associated with wisdom. Jesus encouraged his disciples to be meek in his words, “Learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart” (Mt 11:29). This meekness does not sanction dominance over the weak. Rather, when faced with inevitable challenges, the disciple imitates Jesus, who stood before Pilate and endured excruciating pain to win our salvation. the meek are not wimps. their strength comes from the crucified Christ. When tempted by passion, fear, or force, the virtuous person’s meekness brings inner strength, calm and peace. As a virtue, meekness prepares us for the unexpected and joins us to the Risen Christ. How might I approach my work, my family, and my daily life with a spirit of humility? Copyright by Our Sunday Visitor, Inc. Prayer Intentions of Pope Francis JUNE Universal: That the unemployed may receive support and find the work they need to live in dignity. McAtee We still need a few Lectors to read the Word on Sundays once a month. Thank you to those who have volunteered, and to those who have volunteered to count. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Ordinary Time beckons, and so on this Sunday we surrender the last glimmers of paschal joy as we celebrate the renewal of our life around the table of the Eucharist. This feast reminds us that the goal of the catechumen’s journey through Lent is not the baptismal font at Easter, but rather the Pentecost. It all is about life lived in the Spirit’s embrace in relationship to the Body of Christ, which is found both “on the table” and “at the table”. The season of confirmation is also drawing to a close, and this feast serves as a reminder that his sacrament, a solemn sending from font to table, is keyed to renewed vigor. Confirmation has sometimes been sadly misunderstood as a kind of graduation from religious formation, but it is nothing of the sort. It is about being led by the Lord Jesus to the place where the Spirit flourishes, and where the gifts of the Spirit are most easily detectable. After next week we will resume our consideration of the sacrament of confirmation, its rich and somewhat tangles history, its challenging theology, and its changing celebration. Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM
