Edgar… I once read a story about a young man who stood in the middle of his town to proclaim to everyone that he had the most beautiful heart in the whole valley. A large crowd gathered, and they all admired his heart for it was perfect. There was no mark or flaw in it. The young man was proud and boasted about his beautiful heart. Suddenly, an old man appeared at the front of the crowd and said, “Your heart is not nearly as beautiful as mine.” Everyone turned to look at the old man’s heart. It didn’t look very appealing; it was full of scars and jagged edges. “You must be joking,” said the young man; “mine is perfect and yours is a mess of scars and tears.” “Yes,” said the old man, “Yours is perfect looking but I would never trade it with you. You see, every scar I have represents a person to whom I have given my love –I tear a piece of my heart and give it to them, and often they give me a piece of their heart which fits into the empty place in my heart; but because the pieces aren’t exact, I have some rough edges, which I cherish, because they remind me of the love we have shared.” The young man stood silently with tears running down his cheeks. He walked up to the old man, reached into his perfect-looking heart, and ripped a piece out. The old man took the young man’s offering, placed it in his heart and then took a piece from his old scared heart and placed it in the wound in the young man’s heart. The young man looked at his heart, not perfect anymore but more beautiful than ever since love from the old man’s heart flowed into his. They embraced and walked side by side. On this my last weekend at the Cathedral of St. Ignatius Loyola as a parochial vicar, I would like to believe that my heart is now more beautiful than when I first arrived 5 years ago because of the love that we have shared. I am leaving a piece of my heart in this wonderful community. I am also taking a piece of the heart of this incredible community. I firmly believe that there are no coincidences in the lives of those who love God and are guided by his Spirit. I am certain that it was no coincidence that I was sent here. I am sure the Holy Spirit sent me here so that we could share love together. I thank the Spirit for sending me here; for all the love that I have received. My heart has been forever enlarged, and it’s more beautiful thanks to you. I will miss you, but I will carry you in my heart forever! Fr. Edgar Mazariegos The Cathedral Clergy and Staff want to wish our parish families a very blessed and bountiful Thanksgiving Holiday! God has done wondrous things on earth. Sirach 50:22-24 “And now, bless the God of all, who has done wondrous things on earth: Who fosters people’s growth from their mother’s womb, and fashions them according to his will! May he grant you joy of heart And may peace abide among you; May his goodness toward us endure in Israel to deliver us in our days.” The Parish Hall & Office will be closed Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. for the Thanksgiving Weekend. There will be one daily Mass on Thanksgiving Day at 9:00 a.m. Cathedral of St. Ignatius Loyola - Parish Social Ministries Office 9999 North Military Trail - Palm Beach Gardens, FL 33410 Office: (561) 622-2565 or (561) 627-7478 Dear Friends of the Cathedral of St. Ignatius Loyola Parish Social Ministries, Our Cathedral Parish Social Ministries has a tremendous impact upon the thousands of individuals and families that come to our door for assistance. The various services that are offered enable our parish family, as the people of God, to help fulfill the Church’s mission of love, justice, freedom and peace by communally responding in love to a wide variety of needs. This past year, the ministry was blessed with an increase in parish support through canned food donations. We continue to seek ways to improve the lives of these in our parish and local community. Parish Social Ministry is a vibrant growing part of our faith community here at the Cathedral of St. Ignatius Loyola. This Ministry is staffed by the Coordinator of Parish Social Ministry, Deacon Miguel Munoz and many generous parish volunteers who are committed to helping the people of our community. Volunteer ministers give freely of their time and talent providing assistance to those with basic needs, ministering with compassion, sensitivity and confidentiality while striving to treat each person with the dignity they deserve in Christ. The Cathedral’s Parish Social Ministry provides: Direct Service: food, clothing, shelter needs, transportation, at home or telephone visits, financial assistance and special services, support groups, bereavement, and advocacy for and visitation to the elderly and vulnerable. Every time our Parish Social Ministry Office, through your support, meets an individual’s basic needs, advocates for social change to reduce poverty, or creates a partnership to improve the community, YOU are doing Parish Social Ministry and being a living witness to the Gospel imperative to respond to the needs of our brothers and sisters. As supporters of this ministry, you provide hope, joy, and love. Thank You! We invite you to join us on Wednesday, December 4th, 2013 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. for our Annual Parish Social Ministries Christmas Celebration in our Parish Hall in support of those who will benefit from your generosity. We hope that you will be as generous as your means allow. Thanks again helping us to assist these families and individuals who have so little. Please help our Cathedral Parish to make this year brighter for the families in our community who are most in need. May God Bless You and Your Loved Ones, Very Reverend Thomas E. All High School Teens are welcome!! November 24th: No Life Night No Classes this week: Next class: Dec. 4th Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe - Year C Sunday, 24 Nov 2013 Reflection for Young People by Lisa-Marie Calderone-Stewart What do you know about kings? Kings have power and authority. They live in palaces, with good food, entertainment, and servants. How is this image similar to your idea of who Jesus is? How is this image different? Do you think Jesus made a big deal about being a “king” when he was hanging out with the Apostles? How do you think he treated them? Lots of people wonder what “INRI” stands for. Think of each “I” as a “J,” and it’s easier to see. Jesus of Nazareth, King (“Rex” in Latin) of the Jews. Jesus wasn’t in the habit of calling himself King of the Jews. How do you think he got that title? Who would have most likely seen him as a real king and leader? Why? Who might have used that title only in a mocking way? Why? If Jesus came today instead of two thousand years ago, do you think modern Americans would see him as a king? Why or why not? Do you see Jesus as a king? If not, why not? If so, a king of what? or a king of whom? P. Edgar Mazariegos.
