FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK
Today has traditionally been called “Gaudete Sunday.”
The Latin tag is derived from Paul’s appeal in the second
reading to “rejoice always in the Lord,” and the Latin
Mass text based on that reading. The irony and paradox of
this Christian joy is underlined by the fact that Paul wrote
those words in prison. But from there he could see the
progress of God’s work.
Is it obvious to us? We feel that this is not the time for
joy when there is so much suffering and moral evil. It is
interesting, then, that the first reading is from the prophet
Zephaniah, who is almost exclusively concerned with
gloomy visions of Judgment Day. Today the Church
selects the only optimistic text in Zephaniah, in which the
prophet has been touched by the spirit of joy.
This, we are assured on all sides, is “the season of joy.”
Let us recapture that feeling of joy in our lives and reflect
it to those who are joyless.
SCHOOL NEWS
Christmas Baskets for the Poor
The school is collecting canned goods for Christmas
Baskets for the poor. Please bring in non-perishable food
items to the school or the rectory office.
Sponsor a Child
For an alternative Christmas gift for a loved one, please
consider sponsoring a child at St. Peter the Apostle
School. Any donation would be greatly appreciated to
help a family who is having financial difficulties. Please

CHRISTMAS MASS SCHEDULE
This year’s Christmas Mass schedule is as follows:
Christmas Eve– 5 p.m., 10 p.m. / Christmas Day– 9:30
a.m., 11 a.m., and 12:30 p.m.
GIVING TREE
The Bethesda Project is a caring family for the homeless
in Philadelphia.
It provides shelter, housing, and
programs reaching out to chronically homeless men and
women. We have a “Giving Tree” located at the front of
the church. With your help, the Giving Tree will help
increase the number of people we can help this Christmas
season through the Bethesda Project. Tokens are one of
the items they need. Please consider taking a star
“ornament” from the tree, and donating tokens (or a
monetary donation) to help us support this program.
Please leave donations at the rectory office.
SONG RECITAL
We invite everyone to take a “quick break” from the
busy days of this Season to spend some time with us - to
sit and relax, to listen to a Song recital featuring Advent
Carols, at St. Peter’s on Sunday, December 16, at 3 p.m.
ST. JOHN NEUMANN FEAST DAY MASS
A special Mass, celebrating the Feast of St. John
Neumann, will be held on Saturday, January 5, 2013, at
12:15 p.m. in the Upper Church. Following the Mass,
join us for a Luncheon Reception at the Ukrainian
Catholic Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 830 N.
Franklin St., Philadelphia. Tickets for the luncheon are

GIFT SHOP SALE
Please take some time to visit our Gift Shop for a
Christmas sale. We are offering 10% off all statues,
tapestries, and books. The sale ends on Monday,
December 24.

There will be no CCD classes on December 23, and
December 30 for Christmas and New Year’s break.
Classes will resume on January 6.

PARISH REGISTRATION
In order to receive a letter from the pastor stating that
you are a registered member of the parish and are eligible
for the high school tuition subsidy, you are required to
attend Sunday Mass on a regular basis, be registered in
the parish, and help to support the parish by use of your
church envelopes. If you are not receiving the monthly
mailing of the church envelopes, please stop by the
rectory office to register.
WEEKLY MASS WITH ARCHBISHOP CHAPUT
Archbishop Chaput has begun to hear confession and
celebrate Mass at the Cathedral Basilica of Sts. Peter and
Paul, 18th and the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, each Sunday.
All are welcome to attend! Confessions are heard at 5:30
p.m., followed by Mass at 6:30 p.m. Archbishop Chaput’s
homilies from all Masses celebrated at the Cathedral can be
downloaded as an mp3 file at www.archphila.org. Archbishop

HORARIO DE NAVIDAD
Este año el horario de las Misas de Navidad es el
siguiente: Nochebuena– 5 p.m., 10 p.m. / Día de Navidad
– 9:30 a.m. 11 a.m., y 12:30 p.m.
DEL ESCRITORIO DEL PÁRROCO
El día de hoy se le ha llamado tradicionalmente
Domingo Gaudete” o de la “Alegría”. El nombre latino se
deriva de la petición de Pedro en la segunda lectura de
“alégrense siempre en el Señor”, y del texto de la Misa en
latín en el que está basada esta lectura. La ironía y
paradoja de esta alegría cristiana se manifiesta en el hecho
que Pablo escribió esas palabras en la prisión. Pero desde
allí podía ver el progreso de la obra de Dios.
¿Nos parece obvio a nosotros? Sentimos que este no es
un tiempo para la alegría cuando hay tanto sufrimiento e
inmoralidad. Es interesante, entonces, que la primera
lectura sea del profeta Sofonías, que está casi
exclusivamente preocupado con sombrías visiones del
Día del Juicio. Hoy la Iglesia selecciona la única parte
optimista de Sofonías, donde el profeta es tocado por el
espíritu del gozo.
Esta es, se nos asegura en todas partes, “la temporada de
la alegría”. Recuperemos ese espíritu de alegría en nuestra
vida y que se refleje en los que no tienen ese gozo.
MISA DE LA FIESTA DE SAN JUAN NEUMANN
Una misa especial, celebrando la Fiesta de San Juan
Neumann, se celebrará el Sábado, 5 de Enero 2013, a las
12:15 p.m., en la Iglesia de arriba. Después de la Misa,
únete a nosotros para una recepción de almuerzo en la
Catedral Católica Ucraniana de la Inmaculada
Concepción, 830 N. Franklin St., Filadelfia. Los tickets
para el almuerzo son $10.00. Por favor llame a la oficina
del Santuario al (215) 627-3080 para más información.
GIVING TREE (ARBOL)
El Proyecto de Bethesda es una familia para las personas
sin hogar en Filadelfia. El proyecto provee refugio,
vivienda y programas que alcanzan a los hombres y
mujeres crónicamente sin hogar. Tenemos un "Giving
Tree”, en la parte delantera de la iglesia. Con su ayuda, el
árbol ayudará a aumentar el número de personas que
podemos ayudar en esta temporada navideña a través del
Proyecto Bethesda. Los tokens son uno de los elementos
que necesitan. Por favor de considerar llevarse una
estrella "ornamento" del árbol, y dejar una donación de
tokens (o una donación monetaria) en la oficina de la
rectoría para ayudarnos a apoyar este programa.
REGISTRACIÓN PARROQUIAL
Para recibir una carta del párroco diciendo que eres un
miembro registrado de la parroquia y eres elegible para el
subsidio de matrícula para la escuela segundaria, es
necesario que asistas a la Misa del Domingo
regularmente, que estés registrado en la parroquia, y que
ayudes a apoyar la parroquia por el uso de tus sobres de la
iglesia. Si no estás recibiendo tus sobres de la iglesia
cada mes, favor de ir a la oficina de la rectoría para
registrarte.
RECITAL VILLANCICOS
Invitamos a todos a tomar un “descanso rápido” de los
días atareados de esta temporada para pasar algún tiempo
con nosotros - para sentarse y relajarse, para escuchar un
Recital de Villancicos de Adviento, aquí en San Pedro , el
Domingo, 16 de Diciembre, a las 3 p.m.

artículos religiosos para una venta de Navidad.
Estamos

El Arzobispo Chaput ha comenzado a escuchar
confesiones y a celebrar Misa en la Catedral Basílica de
San Pedro y San Pablo, 18 y Benjamin Franklin Parkway,
cada Domingo. ¡Todos son bienvenidos a asistir! Las
confesiones serán escuchadas a las 5:30 p.m., seguido por
la Misa a las 6:30 p.m. Las homilías del Arzobispo
