PRESENTATION OF 3-YEAR OLD CHILDREN
PRESENTACIÓN DE NIÑOS DE 3 AÑOS
The presentation of children in the temple at the age
of three is a Mexican cultural tradition that apparently has its
origins in the time of the Reformation. At that time, Mass was
offered as a sign of thanks for the life of the infant, since it was
considered that by this age the child had consolidated his
existence, given the high infant mortality; however, this
celebration does not take place in all the states of the Mexican
Republic.
La presentación de los niños y niñas en el templo al
cumplir los tres años es una tradición de la cultura mexicana
que al parecer tiene sus orígenes en la época de la Reforma.
En ese tiempo, se solía ofrecer una misa de acción de gracias
por la vida del infante, pues se considera que a esa edad ya
había consolidado su existencia, dada la alta mortalidad infantil
de la época; no obstante, esta celebración no se lleva a cabo
en todos los estados de la Republica Mexicana.
With the passage of time, interpretations and various
meanings have been integrated, as well as those that are less
precise, to give meaning to this celebration. One of them has to
do with the presentation of the Virgin Mary in the temple.
According to an apocryphal gospel, Mary accompanied by her
parents St. Ann and St. Joachim, was taken to the temple to be
initiated in the knowledge of faith and service in the temple.
This gospel, considered apocryphal, was discarded. Another
interpretation has to do with the feast of Candlemas or the
Presentation of the Child in the Temple and the purification of
Mary.
Con el paso del tiempo, se han ido integrando
interpretaciones y significados muy variados, como también
poco precisos, para dar sentido a dicha celebración. Uno de
ellos, tiene que ver con la presentación de la Virgen María en
el templo, Según un evangelio apócrifo, María fue
acompañada por sus padres santa Ana y san Joaquín. De
niña, fue llevada al templo para ser iniciada en el conocimiento
de la fe en el servicio al templo. Este evangelio, al ser
considerado apócrifo, fue desechado. Otra interpretación se
refiere a la Fiesta de la Candelaria, o Presentación del Niño
Jesús en el templo, y la purificación de María.
According to the Gospel, the Virgin and St. Joseph
came to the temple 40 days after the birth of the baby Jesus.
The priest performed the ritual of atonement in her favor and
also consecrated the firstborn male according to the Law of
Moses (Luke 2:22-40). It should be made clear that at this time,
the custom was to only present the firstborn male when he was
40 days old, not at the age 3.
De acuerdo al Evangelio , la Virgen y san José se
presentaron en el templo 40 días después de nacido el niño
Jesús. El sacerdote realizo el rito de expiación a favor de ella y
también para consagrar al primogénito varón, según la ley de
Moisés (Lc 2, 22-40). En ese entonces, cabe aclarar que, la
costumbre era solamente para presentar en el templo al
primogénito varón, a los 40 días de nacido (no a los 3 años).

year old children and act of gratitude from the Secretariat of
Pastoral Liturgy in the Archdiocese of Mexico, states: “This
celebration is rather an act of thanksgiving for the life of the
infant (which can take place during the liturgy of the Word or if
Eucharistic participation is adequate and sufficient, during the
Mass), more than a presentation (since the child is recognized
by God and the community of believers, since he is baptized”).
“It is also the opportunity to ask for God’s blessing in
the life of the child, as well as a moment to ask for divine help
as parents and godparents of the infant, so they can fulfilled the
commitment acquired with their children when they were
baptized, to teach them the faith and love of God, mainly
through the experience of Christian values and attitude in the
family and their environment. It is also a suitable time during
this act of gratitude, a moment for parents to ratify their
baptismal commitment with their children, and help them to
appreciate those promises. For this same reason, it is
convenient that the godparents from the baptism and of the
presentation at age three be the same.”
What this should not be is a big unnecessary party
where the focus of this beautiful celebration is lost.

La pregunta es ¿Qué debe ser la presentación de los

Pastoral de Liturgia de la Arquidiócesis de México, se sugiere
lo siguiente: “Esta celebración es mas bien una acción de
gracias por la vida del infante (que puede darse en una liturgia
de la palabra, o si se prevé una adecuada y suficiente
participación eucarística, dentro de la misa), más que una
presentación (pues el niño es conocido por Dios y por la
comunidad de creyentes, ya que es un bautizado)”.
“Es también la oportunidad de pedir la bendición de
Dios en la vida del niño, así como un momento para pedir la
ayuda divina sobre papás y padrinos del infante, para que
puedan cumplir con los compromisos que adquirieron con sus
hijos cuando los llevaron a bautizar, de enseñarles la fe y el
amor a Dios, principalmente por la vivencia de valores y
actitudes cristianas en su familia y en su medio ambiente.
También es muy adecuado durante esta acción de gracias, un
momento para que los padres ratifiquen los compromisos
bautismales para con sus hijos, y así ayudarlos a valorar sus
dichas promesas. Por esta misma razón, conviene que los
padrinos de bautismo y de los tres años sean los mismos”.
Los que no debe ser es una gran fiesta innecesaria
que pierda el enfoque de esta hermosa celebración.

Sustaining Hope for the Future Capital Campaign
Thank you for your generous support of the Sustaining
Hope for the Future campaign. We have pledges
totaling $59,648 from 52 parishioners. Our parish goal is
$146,500 over 3 years. The Diocese will receive 60%
and St. Paul’s 40% of all funds. The funds allocated to
St. Paul’s will be used to repair our church roof, repair
ceiling leaks, plaster and paint inside the church, add
additional security lights and cameras to our property
and assist with the payment of our debts.
All parishioners are invited to participate in this very
important campaign by making a pledge today.
Please review the campaign materials you received,
pray about your response, and consider a gift to this
campaign. Please return your pledge cards as soon as
possible by placing them in the Sunday collection basket
or returning them to the rectory. Additional pledge cards
are available in the back of the church. Thank you for
your generosity in this very important endeavor.

Nuestra meta parroquial es $146,500 durante un
período de 3 años. La Diócesis recibirá 60% y San
Pablo 40% de todos los fondos. Los fondos asignados
a San Pablo se utilizarán para reparar el tejado de la
iglesia, reparar goteras en el techo, hacer una pintura
interior de la iglesia, poner más luces y cámaras de
seguridad adicionales a nuestra propiedad y ayudar con
el pago de nuestras deudas.
Se invita a todos los feligreses a participar en esta
importante campaña haciendo una promesa hoy.
Por favor revise los materiales de la campaña que se
recibieron, orar acerca de su respuesta, y considerar un
regalo para esta campaña. Por favor devuelva sus

the Parish Office or after mass. The cost is $15 per

A pilgrimage to promote unity and solidarity among
Mexican and American community separated by the
U.S.-Mexico border. The Guadalupe Torch will reach St.
Paul Church in Wilmington, Delaware. Friday,
