WORLD PEACE DAY FOCUSES ON SLAVERY
The Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace
announced that the theme selected by Pope Francis for
the 48th World Day of Peace is “Slaves no more, but
brothers and sisters.” In his message, Pope Francis
condemned those who profit from slavery by taking
advantage of the global conflicts, economic crisis, and
corruption to carry out their evil. The World Day of
Peace, initiated by Pope Paul VI, is celebrated each year
on the first day of January. This will be the second time
Pope Francis celebrates the Day of Peace.
The Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace
stated that many people consider slavery a thing of the
past. “In fact, this social plague remains all too real in
today’s world. Peace can only exist when each human
being recognizes every other person as a brother or
sister with the same dignity….Slavery deals a murderous
blow to this fundamental fraternity, and so to peace as
well. Slavery today is also endured in the form of human
trafficking, exploitation, prostitution, and slave labor.
Human trafficking is reported to be one of the most
profitable criminal activity in the world
The Global Freedom Network informed in 2014
that there are currently an estimated 29.8 million forced
labor victims worldwide. Furthermore, the United Nations
International Labor Organization reports that $150 billion
in illegal profits are made in the private economy each
year through modern forms of slavery, and more than
half of the victims of forced labor are women and girls,
primarily in domestic work and commercial sexual
exploitation, while men and boys were primarily in forced
economic exploitation in agriculture, construction, and
mining.
In Guadium et Specs, the Second Vatican
Council condemned slavery statin, “Whatever insults
human dignity, such as subhuman living conditions,
arbitrary imprisonment, deportation, slavery, prostitution,
the selling of women and children; as well as, disgraceful
working conditions, where men are treated as mere tools
for profit, rather than as free and responsible persons; all
these things and others of their like are infamies indeed.
They poison human society, but they do more harm to
those who practice them than those who suffer from the
injury. Moreover, they are supreme dishonor to the
Creator.”
The Pontifical Council for justice and Peace says
that in order to counter slavery effectively, the inviolable
dignity of every person must be recognized above all.
“Moreover, this acceptance of dignity must be anchored
solidly in fraternity. Fraternity requires us to reject any
inequality which would allow one person to enslave
another. It demands instead that we act everywhere with
proximity and generosity, thus leading to liberation and
inclusion for everyone. Our purpose is to build a
civilization based on the equal dignity of every person
without discrimination. To achieve this will also require
the commitment of the media, of education and of culture
to a renewed society pledged to freedom, justice and
therefore peace.”

LA JORNADA MUNDIAL DE LA PAZ SE CENTRA EN
LA ESCLAVITUD
El Consejo Pontificio de Justicia y Paz anuncio que el
tema seleccionado por el Papa Francisco para la 48a octava
Jornada Mundial de la Paz es: “ya no somos esclavos, sino
hermanos y hermanas”. En su mensaje, el Papa Francisco
condenó a quienes se benefician de la esclavitud
aprovechándose de los conflictos económicos, la crisis global y
la corrupción para llevar a cabo su mal. La Jornada Mundial de
la Paz, iniciada por el Papa Pablo VI se celebra todos los años
en el primer día de enero. Esta será la segunda vez que el
Papa Francisco la celebra.
El Consejo Pontificio de Justicia y Paz declaro que
muchas personas consideran la esclavitud como algo del
pasado. “De hecho, esta plaga social sigue siendo demasiado
real en el mundo de hoy. La paz sólo puede existir cuando
cada ser humano reconoce en todas las demás personas a un
hermano o hermana con la misma dignidad….La esclavitud da
un golpe asesino a esta fraternidad fundamental, así como a la
paz”. La esclavitud hoy día se sufre en forma de trafico
humano, explotación prostitución o trabajos forzados. Se dice
que el trafico humano es una de las actividades criminales
más lucrativas del mundo.
La Red Global de Libertad informó de que en 2014 se
calcula que hay unos 29.8 millones de víctimas de trabajos
forzados por todo el mundo. Es más, la Organización
Internacional del Trabajo de las Naciones Unidas informa de
que se logran $150 billones en ganancias ilícitas en la
economía privada, a través de diversas formas de esclavitud.
Más de la mitad de las víctimas de estos trabajos forzados son
mujeres y jóvenes, principalmente en el trabajo domestico y la
explotación sexual comercial, mientras que los hombres y
chicos estaban principalmente en explotación económica
forzosa en la agricultura, la construcción y la minería.
El Concilio Vaticano II condenó la esclavitud en la
Gaudium et Spes, diciendo: “Todo lo que insulta a la dignidad
humana, tal como las condiciones de vida infrahumana, la
prisión arbitraria, la deportación, la esclavitud, la prostitución,
la venta de mujeres y niños, así como condiciones laborales
indignas en las que los hombres son tratados como meros
instrumentos de lucro en lugar de como personas libres y
responsables: todas estas cosas y otras en sus vidas son
infamias. Envenenan la sociedad humana, pero hacen más
daño a quienes las infligen que a quienes sufren la herida. Es
más, son una deshonra suprema del Creador”.
El Consejo Pontificio para la Justicia y la Paz dice
que, para contrarrestar la esclavitud eficazmente, se debe
reconocer la dignidad inviolable de la persona por encima de
todas las cosas. “Es más, esta aceptación de la dignidad debe
estar firmemente anclada en la fraternidad. La fraternidad nos
requiere que rechacemos cualquier desigualdad que permitiera
a una persona esclavizar a otra. Nos exige, en cambio, que
actuemos en todas partes con cercanía y generosidad,
llevando así a la liberación y la inclusión de todos. Nuestra
intención es construir una civilización basada en la igualdad de
dignidad de toda persona sin discriminación. Lograr esto
requerirá el compromiso de los medios, de la educación y de la
cultura a una sociedad renovada comprometida con la libertad,
la justicia y, por tanto, la paz”.

Sustaining Hope for the Future Capital
Campaign
Thank you for your generous support of the
Sustaining Hope for the Future campaign. We
have pledges totaling $88,308 from 81
parishioners. Our parish goal is $146,500 over 3
years. The Diocese will receive 60% and St.
Paul’s 40% of all funds. The funds allocated to St.
Paul’s will be used to repair our church roof, repair
ceiling leaks, plaster and paint inside the church,
add additional security lights and cameras to our
property and assist with the payment of our debts.
All parishioners are invited to participate in this
very important campaign by making a pledge
today. Please review the campaign materials
you received, pray about your response, and
consider a gift to this campaign. Please return
your pledge cards as soon as possible by placing
them in the Sunday collection basket or returning
them to the rectory. Additional pledge cards are
available in the back of the church. Thank you for
your generosity in this very important endeavor.

Did you know that on the Diocesan Website there
is a 20 minute presentation entitled: “For the Sake
of
God’s
Children:
Safe
Environment
Education” that explains the Diocesan safe
environment program and provides valuable
information for parents and other adults who are
engaged with children? Parishes and other
institutions are responsible for the implementation
of the safe environment program. All professional
Church personnel and all non-compensated
personnel who have regular contact with children
and youth are required to participate in education
and have the appropriate background checks and
ethical standards completed before beginning their
ministry/activity. Each parish/school annually
conducts an orientation training program for all
employees/volunteers within the respective areas
of ministry or activity. For more information visit
