PARRANDAS IN THE HISPANIC CULTURE
Parrandas are a Hispanic cultural tradition of debatable
origin that dates back at least two centuries. According to
a book published in 1892 by Pedro Diaz Cassou, the
term parranda comes from an Arabic word that means
revelry (which meaning in turn is joy, celebration, and
lively fun.) The Diccionario de la Lengua Española
(Dictionary of Spanish Language) defines it as a group of
musicians who come out at night playing instruments or
singing to have fun, and, especially, going from one
place to another. In several countries to mention
parranda is to speak of Christmas; however, in every one
of these it has a different history and characteristics.
According to Humberto Olmos Martinez, in Cuba
the parrandas emerged around 1820 in the city of San
Juan de los Remedios, when a priest named Francisco
Vigil de Quiñones hired a group of children to make great
noise during the early morning hours from December
16th to 24th, with the aim of waking up the neighbors in
the village who preferred to sleep over attending the
Aguinaldo Masses. Such uproar evolved and emerged
as traditional festivals of barrios to which, over time,
elements such as musical instruments, artificial
fireworks, and floats were added.
In Puerto Rico, parrandas—also know as trullas
or Christmas assaults—are a tradition of Catholic roots.
Cesar Moline explains that their origin was the custom of
going in procession to visit different houses, to recall the
moment in which Saint Joseph and the Virgin Mary
sought posada (lodging) in Bethlehem. Families would
open their homes to the people as a gesture of
hospitality and happiness for the Child Jesus who was
about to be born. The addition of Christmas carols and
aguinaldos (folk songs) generated an authentic Puerto
Rican tradition that with the years became what it is
today: a surprise party (for those who receive and
welcome it) in the wee hours of the morning.
Parrandas are a musical genre in Venezuela that
is mostly heard in December; it was born in the states of
Aragua and Carabobo, where a marked difference was
established between them and the Aguinaldo. Ahicher
Rodriguez says the parranderos go down the streets
singing Christmas serenades, accompanied by different
musical instruments among which the Venezuelan cuatro
and maracas are often found. Several soloists and choirs
can participate in parrandas, and the lyrics of the songs
deal with everyday situations, although they commonly
speak about Christmas and the Child God.
Parrandas are also celebrated in the Dominican
Republic, El Salvador, and Spain with their own
attributes and variants. These differences enrich the
Hispanic cultural heritage and are worth knowing and
celebrating. In the majority of the places with a custom of
parrandas, these have in common the visit by a group of
friends or family to a home and gathering with music
(frequently Christmas related), in a festive atmosphere.
This is, therefore, the foundation of a tradition that
affirms—more than a heritage—an important part of the
Latino idiosyncrasy such as faith, fellowship, and joy.

LAS PARRANDAS EN LA CULTURA HISPANA
Las parrandas son una tradición cultural hispana de
por lo menos dos siglos y origen controvertido. Según un libro
de Pedro Díaz Cassou publicado en 1892, la palabra parranda
viene de un término árabe que significa jolgorio (cuyo
significado a su vez es regocijo, fiesta y diversión bulliciosa). El
Diccionario de la lengua española la define como una cuadrilla
de músicos que salen de noche tocando instrumentos o
cantando para divertirse y, especialmente, yendo de un sitio a
otro. En varios países decir parranda es hablar de Navidad; sin
embargo, en cada uno de ellos ésta tiene una historia y
características particulares.
De acuerdo a Humberto Olmos Martínez, las
parrandas en Cuba surgieron alrededor del año 1820 en la
ciudad de San Juan de los Remedios, cuando un sacerdote
llamado Francisco Vigil de Quiñones contrató a un grupo de
niños para que en las madrugadas del 16 al 24 de diciembre
hicieran un gran ruido, con el fin de despertar a los vecinos de
la villa, que preferían dormir a ir a las Misas de Aguinaldo.
Aquel alboroto evolucionó y trascendió como fiestas
tradicionales de barrios a las que, con el tiempo, se les
incorporaron elementos como instrumentos musicales, fuegos
artificiales y carrozas.
En Puerto Rico, las parrandas—también conocidas
como trullas o asaltos navideños—son una tradición de
raigambre católica. César Moline explica que su origen fue la
costumbre de ir en procesión a visitar distintas casas, para
rememorar el momento en que San José y la Virgen María
buscaban posada en Belén. Las familias abrían sus hogares a
la gente como un gesto de hospitalidad y alegría por el niño
que estaba por nacer. La adición de villancicos y aguinaldos
fue generando una autentica tradición que con los años se
convirtió en lo que es hoy: una jarana sorpresa (para quien la
recibe y acoge), en horas de la madrugada.
Las parrandas son un género musical en Venezuela
que se escucha mayormente en diciembre; éste nació en los
estados Aragua y Carabobo, donde se estableció una
diferencia marcada entre ellas y el aguinaldo. Ahicher
Rodríguez dice que los parranderos van por las calles
cantando serenatas navideñas, acompañados de diferentes
instrumentos musicales entre los cuales suelen estar el cuatro
venezolano y las maracas. En las parrandas pueden intervenir
varios cantantes solistas y coros, y las canciones tratan sobre
situaciones cotidianas, aunque es común que hablen sobre la
Navidad y el Niño Dios.
En República Dominicana, El Salvador y España
también se realizan parrandas, con sus propias cualidades y
variantes. Estas diferencia enriquecen el acervo cultural
hispano y son dignas de conocerse y celebrarse. En la
mayoría de los sitios con costumbre de parrandas, éstas
tienen en común la visita de un grupo de amigos o familiares a
un hogar y la reunión allí con música (frecuentemente de
Navidad), en un ambiente festivo. Éste es, pues el fundamento
de una tradición que afirma—más que un bagaje—una parte
importante de la idiosincrasia latina como la fe, la
confraternización y la alegría.

parishioners. Our parish goal is $146,500 over 3
years. The Diocese will receive 60% and St.
Paul’s 40% of all funds. The funds allocated to St.
Paul’s will be used to repair our church roof, repair
ceiling leaks, plaster and paint inside the church,
add additional security lights and cameras to our
property and assist with the payment of our debts.

consider a gift to this campaign. Please return
your pledge cards as soon as possible by placing
them in the Sunday collection basket or returning

What does the Diocese do for survivors of abuse?
In accord with Article 1 of the Charter for the
Protection Children and Young People the Diocese
reaches out to survivors and their families
demonstrating a sincere commitment to their
spiritual and emotional well-being. Our first
obligation to survivors of clergy sexual abuse is
healing and reconciliation. Our Diocese has
appointed a Survivor Assistance Coordinator, a
licensed therapist/counselor with many years of
experience in handling sexual abuse, to coordinate
assistance for survivors of clergy sexual abuse.
The Survivor Assistance Coordinator speaks with
the survivor (and/or family) apologizing for the
offense, listening to the survivor’s experience, and
offering counseling, spiritual help, and providing for
therapy either through counselors at Catholic
Charities or agreeing to pay for expenses incurred
by the survivor if he/she chooses other counseling
opportunities. We are committed to survivor
outreach and their spiritual and emotional
wellbeing. The services offered by the Diocese are
in place for each survivor for as long as necessary.

which will take place at St. John the Apostle,
