For Paul and Barnabas, it’s smooth sailing. For the sponsoring church at Antioch, good news. The second reading—a vision—offers a picture of triumph, pure and simple. We might paraphrase God’s direct words to read: “Don’t you see? I make all things new!” The young church remains new and young to this day if and when it follows the command Jesus lays down in the Gospel: “Love one another.” The attitude and actions of love define the disciples and identify them with their master. Every person on this earth can be a disciple. For discipleship does not depend on learning or sophistication or age or arcane knowledge of secret cults. We are asked to study and practice the ways of love, right here and right now in the company of ordinary people. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY Dear Brothers and Sisters, this April we celebrate the 200th birthday of our founder, Frederic Ozanam. Frederic was a pioneer of the social doctrine of the Church. He wrote and spoke about the great gulf between those who have much and those who have little; how unaware we can be of the structural injustices in our lives and culture. How it is essential that all have sufficient and all contribute responsibly to their society. Frederic wrote, “Charity is the Samaritan who pours oil on the wounds of the traveler who has been attacked. It is justice’s role to prevent the attacks.” It is necessary that we as Catholics take time to examine our personal actions and those of our community to know the ways these actions support and the ways they undermine human life and dignity. We urge you to take some time this week to consider this. We are called to love and justice and this is not always easy. “I ask God for a greater desire to go where Jesus has gone, to live as He lived, to love as He loved. I realize the cost and this challenges me but I know that it is only in giving glory to God that I can become the person God made me to be.” Sacred Space 2013 VEHICLE DONATIONS: any condition. Dorothy Day Page 2 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Frequent fliers today have many ways to accrue air miles, so one doesn’t always have to endure long hours in cramped seats to earn free hours in cramped seats. In St. Paul’s day, there were no such perks, nor would there have been any legal system for him to protest the shipwrecks he endured. He had other rewards in mind. The churches that he established in the catalogue of cities from today’s first reading must have been very different from one another. Language, culture, customs, religious history, obstacles to community, social challenges, the places where they met, their clothing, their bread and wine, all distinct, particular to the area. There were social customs as well: in a Christian household, the only place where a slave would be able to stand legally as an equal with the master would be at the table of the Lord, because at that table a new world of reconciliation was imaged. While Paul revered local customs, he was relentless about challenging the ways that people lived their Christian lives and how their worship reflected them. It is much the same today, as a global Catholic Church seeks to respect local customs and culture, allowing for differences in many things, yet always giving expression to the underlying presence of Christ, who binds us all together into his body. —James Field, Copyright © J. CYCLE C—BULLETIN 22 As a parish community we welcome into our faith through the Sacrament of Baptism Isaac Galindo, Janiyah Guevarra, Dayanara Huerta Perez, Isaias Osorio, Jordy Perez, Natalie Perez, Sofia Ruvalcaba Romo,Joslyn Ruiz Zepeda, Kaitlyn Ruiz Zepeda, Isaac Zepeda POPE FRANCIS Pope Francis made remarks about the Holy Spirit and the anniversary of the Second Vatican Council and people who don’t like change. The Pope said one example of this resistance [to the Holy Spirit] was the Second Vatican council which he called “a beautiful work of the Holy Spirit.” But 50 years later, “have we done everything the Holy Spirit was asking us to do during the Council,” he asked. The answer is “No,” said Pope Francis. “We celebrate this anniversary, we put up a monument but we don’t want it to upset us. We don’t want to change and what’s more there are those who wish to turn the clock back.” Vatican employees won’t receive the special bonus they are traditionally awarded when a new pope is elected, the Vatican confirmed on Thursday (April 18), under orders from Pope Francis to give extra money to charity. On account of the difficult situation of the general economy, it seemed neither possible nor opportune to burden Vatican institutions with a considerable unforeseen extraordinary expense,” the Vatican’s chief spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, said in an emailed statement. The money will be drawn from the pontiff’s personal charity budget “as a sign of the church’s attention for the many people who are suffering” from the global economic slowdown, Lombardi said. In 2005, some 4,000 Vatican employees received a 1,000 euro bonus ($1,300) upon the death of Pope John Paul II, and another 500 euros ($650) upon the election of his successor, Benedict XVI. Francis said a few days after his election that he wanted a “poor church, for the poor,” and he has brought a simpler and more sober style to the papacy. In today’s Gospel, Jesus gives His disciples — and us — a new commandment: “Love one another.” Good stewards who spend their time and talents in service to others are well on their way to fulfilling this commandment. IMPENETRABLE The same fence that shuts others out shuts us in. —Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
