The Year of Mercy and Christmas
Our Holy Father Francis has proclaimed that December 8, 2015, until November 20,
2016, will be a Year of Mercy. This special time began on the Solemnity of the Immaculate
Conception of Mary and will end on the Solemnity of Christ the King. These two great
liturgical observances represent 1) the immediate preparation for our salvation as God the
Father kept the mother of the Savior untouched by original sin from the moment of her
conception and 2) the culmination of history as Jesus Christ is recognized by all creation as
universal King.
Human history is salvation history – and each of us has a history that is in need of mercy. St. Paul summarizes
salvation history like this: „Just as through one transgression condemnation came upon all, so through one righteous
act acquittal and life came to all‰ (Rom. 5:18). The biblical understanding is that the sin of Adam and Eve affected
everyone who came after them – that everyone has „inherited‰ the effects of their sin. But so too are we positively
affected by the obedience of the „new Adam‰ Jesus Christ, not by inheritance but by faith. His entire life of
faithfulness to his Father is the „one righteous act‰ by which we find mercy, if only we will accept it. The Year of
Mercy is our time to reflect upon and respond to the great compassion of God in the person of Jesus Christ. MaryÊs
„yes‰ to GodÊs plan for us should be ours too.
But this year is not only for us; it is also for people we know who have distanced themselves from God and the
Church. Be an instrument of mercy to others who are no longer with us at Mass – invite them to come back home
without judging them. The Church is ready to welcome all who have left for whatever reason; letÊs be the doors
that swing wide for them.
El año de la Misericordia y Navidad
Nuestro Santo Padre Francisco ha proclamado que desde el 08 de diciembre 2015 hasta el 20 de noviembre
2016, será un año de la Misericordia.
Esta ocasión especial se inició en la Solemnidad de la Inmaculada Concepción de María y terminará en la
Solemnidad de Cristo Rey.
Estos dos grandes celebraciones litúrgicas representan 1) la preparación inmediata para nuestra salvación ya que
Dios Padre mantuvo a la madre del Salvador sin ser tocada por el pecado original desde el momento de su
concepción y 2) la culminación de la historia, con Jesucristo reconocido por toda la creación como Rey universal.
La historia humana es la historia de la salvación - y cada uno de nosotros tiene una historia que es la necesidad
de la misericordia. St. Paul resume la historia de la salvación de esta forma: "Así como a través de una transgresión
la condena vino sobre todos, a través de un acto de justicia la vida llegó a todos" (Romanos 5:18.). La comprensión
bíblica es que el pecado de Adán y Eva afectó a todos los que vinieron después de ellos - que todo el mundo ha
"heredado" los efectos de su pecado. Pero también lo somos
positivamente afectados por la obediencia del "nuevo Adán"
Jesucristo, no por herencia, sino por la fe. Toda su vida de
fidelidad a su Padre es el "un acto de justicia" por el cual encontramos la misericordia, si sólo lo aceptaremos. El Año de
la Misericordia es nuestro tiempo para reflexionar y
responder a la gran compasión de Dios en la persona de
Jesucristo. Decir "Sí" al plan de Dios como hizo María debería
ser lo que debemos hacer nosotros también.
Pero este año no es sólo para nosotros; también es para la
gente que conocemos que se han distanciado de Dios y la
Iglesia. Ser un instrumento de la misericordia para otros que
ya no están con nosotros en la Misa - invitalos a volver a casa
sin juzgarlos. La Iglesia está lista para dar la bienvenida a
todos los que la han dejado por cualquier motivo; dejemos
que las puertas se abran para ellos

Opening the Doors of Mercy
Pope Francis pushed open the great bronze doors of St. Peter's
Basilica on December 8th to launch his Holy Year of Mercy,
declaring that mercy trumps moralizing in his Catholic Church.
Francis stood in prayer on the threshold of the basilica's Holy
Door then walked through it, the first of an estimated 10 million
faithful who will pass through over the course of the next year in a
rite of pilgrimage dating back centuries.
Francis launched the 12-month jubilee to emphasize what has
become the a recurrent theme of his papacy: showing the merciful
and welcoming side of a Catholic Church. "How much wrong we
do to God and his grace when we speak of sins being punished by
his judgment before we speak of their being forgiven by his
mercy," Francis told an estimated 50,000 people gathered under
rainy skies for his Mass opening the jubilee. "We have to put
mercy before judgment, and in any event God's judgment will always be in the light of his mercy."
Here at St Vincent de Paul, Monsignor David, Father John and Deacons Ronnie and John blessed and formally
opened „our‰ Doors of Mercy. Adorning the doors is a hand-carved sign reading „Christe Eleison‰ done by
parishioner Kas Taylor.
Part of MonsignorÊs blessing of the doors communicates to each of us the challenge of truly living and
demonstrating our Catholic Faith;
„Bless + this door which we consecrate for the Year of Mercy. Here, may those who hunger and thirst
be filled, your children be clothed in glory and sheltered safe from harm. Here, may the sick find
healing, the prisoner know freedom, and our beloved dead enter eternal life. From here, send us,
Lord, to share faith where there is doubt, to be light where there is darkness, to embrace the sinner,
comfort the afflicted, offer forgiveness, and show patience and kindness to all.‰
Abriendo las puertas de la Misericordia
El Papa Francisco abrió las grandes puertas de bronce de la Basílica de San Pedro el 8 de diciembre para lanzar
su Año Santo de la Misericordia, que declara que la misericordia triunfa en su Iglesia Católica. Francisco se puso en
oración en el umbral de la Puerta Santa de la basílica y luego ingreso, siendo el primero de un estimado de 10

La bendición de Monseñor de las puertas comunica a cada uno de nosotros el reto de vivir y demostrar nuestra
fe católica;
"Bendice esta puerta que consagramos para el Año de la Misericordia. Para los que tienen hambre y sed,
sus hijos se vistan en gloria y esten protegidos de cualquier daño. Aquí, la curación alcanzara a los enfermos,
los prisioneros conocerán la libertad, y nuestra amados muertos alcanzaran la vida eterna. A partir de aquí,
envíanos, Señor, a compartir la fe, donde haya duda, que exista luz donde hay oscuridad, para abrazar al
pecador, consolar a los afligidos, ofrecer perdón y mostrar paciencia y bondad a todos

This Tradition re-enacts
Mary and JosephÊs search
for a place to stay in
Bethlehem asking for
Shelter. We began with a
classroom-by-classroom
procession on which the
students and teachers
sang Christmas Carols
appropriate for the
occasion. Those outside
the classroom sang the
part of Joseph asking for
shelter and the students
inside responded the part
of the innkeeper. The
song switched back and
forth until finally the
innkeeper
(last
classroom) decides to let
Joseph, Mary, the Angel
and the shepherds' come
in as a sign of giving
them shelter while
everybody kept singing
the last verse. We continued doing it this way until we have covered all
the classrooms. Each
classroom celebrated
individually afterwards.
