Reflection
From the beginning of the new liturgical calendar, we have been celebrating various events in the life of the Church. From the celebration
of the Incarnation to Epiphany and the Presentation of the Lord to the
beginning of Ordinary Time. Now the season of Ordinary Time come
to a temporary halt as we now enter the season of Lent. This coming
Wednesday is the beginning of the Lenten Season. Many will come to
Church on that day to receive blessed ashes on their forehead. As a gentle reminder, the Season of Lent is a time of penance… a time to reflect
on the areas in our lives that we need to improve with regards to our
personal relationship with Jesus Christ and with our neighbor. As you
individually prepare to reflect on what you will be giving up (sacrificing) for lent, I would ask that we as a parish, also be willing to give up
something as well.
Last year I challenged the parish by asking that each of us give up
two things; the use of bad language and gossiping. This year I am challenging each of us to do the same but I am adding something else to this
challenge. In this Jubilee Year of Mercy, I am asking that we as a parish
strive to be attentive to the way we speak 1) in particular of the use of
bad language; 2) Gossiping, especially in the way we speak of others;
3) and to do acts of kindness/charity. Below I have included a list of
Corporal Works of Mercy as well as a list of Spiritual Works of Mercy
to assist you. In this year of Mercy I encourage everyone to go to confession especially if it’s been a long time. The Lenten Season gives us
this opportunity to reconcile ourselves with God and His Church. I have
also included the Ten Commandments as a reminder as to how we are
to conduct ourselves. In addition, each week I will offer an Examination
of Conscious on each of the commandments to reflect upon as a way to
prepare for the sacrament of reconciliation.
I pray that this Lent will be a time of renewal and commitment to
Jesus Christ, His Church and to one another. Please be assured of my
prayers for each you especially during this Lenten Season.

The Ten Commandments:
1. I am the Lord your God: you shall not have strange gods before
me.
2. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.
3. Remember to keep holy the Lord’s Day.
4. Honor your father and your mother.
5. You shall not kill
6. You shall not commit adultery.
7. You shall not steal.
8. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
9. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife.
10. You shall not covet your neighbor’s goods.
Examination of Conscious
Prior to going to confession, it is advisable that one do an Examination
of Conscience. Recall your sins. Calmly ask yourself what you have
done with full knowledge and full consent against God’s Commandments.
The First Commandment:
• Did I perform my duties toward God reluctantly or grudgingly?
• Did I neglect my prayer life? Did I recite my usual Prayers?
• Did I receive Holy Communion in the state of mortal sin or without
the necessary preparation?
• Did I violate the one-hour Eucharistic fast?
• Did I fail to mention some grave sin in my previous confessions?
• Did I seriously believe in something superstitious or engage in a

Del principio del nuevo calendario litúrgico, hemos estado celebrando
varios eventos en la vida de la Iglesia. De la celebración de la Encarnación a la Epifanía y la Presentación del Señor al inicio del tiempo
ordinario. La estación del tiempo ordinario llegado a un alto temporal
al entrar ahora en la temporada de Cuaresma. Este miércoles es el inicio de la Cuaresma. Muchos vendrán a la iglesia ese día para recibir
las cenizas bendecidas en su frente. Como un recordatorio apacible, la
temporada de Cuaresma es un tiempo de penitencia... un tiempo para
reflexionar sobre las áreas en nuestras vidas que tenemos que mejorar
con respecto a nuestra relación personal con Jesucristo y con nuestro
prójimo. Mientras se prepara individualmente para reflexionar sobre
lo que usted renunciará (sacrificar) para cuaresma, les pido que como
parroquia, también estemos dispuestos a renunciar a algo así. El año
pasado pedí el desafío que como parroquia, cada uno de nosotros renunciarnos a dos cosas; el uso de malas palabras y chismes. Este año
estoy desafiando cada uno de nosotros a hacer lo mismo pero estoy
agregando algo más a este reto. En este año jubilar de la misericordia, estoy preguntando que como parroquia tratamos de estar atentos
a la manera de hablar 1) en particular, el uso de malas palabras; 2)
chismes, sobre todo en la manera de que hablamos de los demás; 3) y
hacer actos de bondad/caridad. A continuación he incluido una lista
de obras corporales de misericordia, así como una lista de obras espirituales de misericordia para ayudarle. En este año de misericordia
les animo a todos a ir a confesión, sobre todo si ha sido mucho tiempo.
La Cuaresma nos da esta oportunidad para reconciliarnos con Dios y
su iglesia. También he incluido los diez mandamientos como un recordatorio en cómo debemos de conducirnos. Además, cada semana voy
a ofrecer un examen de conciencia en cada uno de los mandamientos
como una forma de reflexionar y prepararse para el Sacramento de la
reconciliación.
Rezo para que esta Cuaresma sea un tiempo de renovación y compromiso con Jesucristo, su iglesia y uno al otro. Tenga la seguridad
de mis oraciones para cada uno de ustedes especialmente durante este
tiempo de Cuaresma.

Los Diez Mandamientos
1. Amarás a Dios sobre todas las cosas.

saint’s name mockingly, jokingly, angrily, or in any other irreverent

• Have I been a sponsor in Baptism or participated actively in other
ceremonies outside the Catholic Church?

Men invited to consider diaconate
Have you recently become aware of a desire to deepen your faith life,
but not sure why? Do you feel that your heart is being moved inexplicably in a new or bold way lately? Have you felt of late a greater
need to know Christ more intimately, or a growing desire to follow him
more fully, for some unknown reason? For no apparent reason, has your
awareness increased recently of the needs of the materially and spiritually poor – and perhaps even sensed a greater desire to respond? Do
you live a mature faith, love the church, and follow church teaching, but
have a nagging sense that there’s something missing?
If you answered yes to some of these questions, and you are a man
between 30 and 57, the Holy Spirit might be calling you to explore the
permanent diaconate. Does that possibility excite you? Scare you? Puzzle you? Whatever your reaction, talk to your pastor about what’s going
on in your heart. He’ll help you decide next steps.
The diaconal formation class of 2022 will begin forming in January
2017. Inquiry sessions are scheduled (in Spanish and English) from 2-5
p.m., at these locations.

2016 4th Annual Catholic Men’s Conference
(Conducted in English)
The fourth annual Diocesan Men’s Conference will be held February
20, 2016 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at San José Parish in Austin. The
conference will begin with Mass at 8:30 a.m. celebrated by the Most
Rev. Joe S. Vasquez, Bishop of Austin. The keynote speakers for this
event are, Catholic apologists/evangelists Tim Staples and Trent Horn.

Total Consecration to Jesus through Mary
The 33 Days of Prayer for Total Consecration to Jesus through Mary begin Feb. 20. Each day of prayer represents one year in the life of Christ.

Stations of the Cross
This year we will have the Stations of the Cross in both English and in
Spanish. Beginning Thursday after Ash Wednesday and every Thursday during the Lenten Season we will have the Stations of the Cross
in Spanish immediately after the daily Mass (around 7:15 p.m.) in the
main church. Beginning the Friday after Ash Wednesday and every Friday during the Lenten Season we will have the Stations of the Cross in
English immediately after the daily Mass (around 7:15 p.m.). In addition the Daily Mass for both days (Thursday and Friday) will be celebrated in the main church during the Lenten Season only.
I am requesting any of our parish ministries and organizations who
would like to help facilitate the Stations of the Cross on either day to
contact the parish office and to sign up.

Healing Service
Alan Ames from Australia will be in our Diocese during this Lenten. He is
an internationally known evangelist, visionary, mystic who has been given
the gift of healing, will be praying over each individual who attends the
